Position Summary & Description

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applicants for a full-time Director of Strength and Conditioning Coach.  Working under the supervision of the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, the Director of Strength and Conditioning will be responsible for the management, direction and oversight of a competitive, progressive strength and conditioning program for all 19 varsity sport programs. This position will also have oversight of the IUP Athletics Fueling Station.

Duties:
  • Report to the Director of Athletics.
  • Responsible for management, direction, and oversight of all aspects of a competitive, progressive strength and conditioning program for a 19 sport NCAA Division II athletics program.
  • Advise student athletes and staff on applicable rules, regulations, and ensure compliance of such policies.
  • Coordinate, implement, plan, and manage all in-season and out-of-season player development and strength conditioning including both team and individual programming.
  • Attend team strength and conditioning sessions.
  • Hire and supervise student employment staff/Interns.
  • Work within the budgetary guidelines and administer allotted operating resources to provide necessary program-related equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in fundraising events and the promotion of positive public relations, including community engagement opportunities, as related to the strength and conditioning program.
  • Assist sports information staff with publicity efforts, as related to the strength and conditioning program.
  • Annually, successfully complete First Aid and Safety and CPR certifications.
  • Participate in national and/or state organizations and/or NCAA committees.
  • Cooperate with athletic trainers to ensure student-athletes receive proper medical and physical training services.  Pre and post rehab.
  • Ensure appropriate safety precautions are implemented and followed.
  • Attend appropriate athletics department staff meetings.
  • Assist in coordination of the scheduling of athletic facilities.
  • Coordinate and monitor usage of Memorial Field House.
  • Oversee maintenance and cleanliness of Memorial Field House weight room including equipment.
  • Communicate specific facility maintenance, repair, and renovation work orders in support of maintaining equipment.
  • Work directly with Athletics Administration, coaches, staff, and students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Three years of strength and conditioning experience.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing and motivating student athletes for athletic and personal success.
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Certification (CSCC), or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC), or Certified Strength Coach (CSC).

Preferred:

  • Master's degree.
  • Current activity in this field.
  • Current strength and conditioning certifications.

Essential Functions

This position is heavily involved in outdoor activity and has periods of heavy exertion.  Incumbents must have the following abilities:

  1. Ability to travel to field locations and meeting/training sites by motor vehicle when required.
  2. To work under a variety of adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, and snow.
  3. To be able to work extended hours under adverse conditions in response to emergency conditions.
  4. To work in hazardous situations such as around moving heavy equipment, in and around traffic, at heights, on steep grades, and on ladders and uneven surfaces. 
  5. Employee must be able to observe and react to hazardous warnings, back-up alarms, flashing lights, voice commands and hand signals.
  6. To perform manual laboring duties such as lifting and carrying various weights.
  7. Setting up, operating, testing, and measuring equipment.
  8. Using hand tools such as hammers, pry bars, and taking and transporting material samples. 
  9. Work often requires stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching and prolonged standing.
  10. To withstand exposure to chemical agents, exhaust gases and lubricants, solvents, poisonous plants, animals, and insects and potential injuries such as bruises, scrapes, cuts, strains, and sprains.
  11. To wear all types of required protective gear such as a hard hat, footgear, hearing and eye protection, gloves, and respirators.
