Position Summary & Description

The Office of Intercollegiate Athletics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applicants for a part-time Assistant Football Coach to assist in all aspects of the IUP Football program at the Division II level and to create a quality student-athlete experience in academics, athletics and community service.

Description of Duties:

  • Assist in monitoring and encouraging academic progress and success of student athletes to ensure continuing eligibility to participate in NCAA competition and to graduate.
  • Assist in game preparation (e.g. player conditioning, training, skill building, scouting other teams, and coaching).
  • Assist in player recruitment by maintaining contact with high school coaches to identify potential prospects, recommending schools to be visited, developing a recruiting schedule and recommending students for recruitment and scholarships.
  • Assist in coordination and participation in fund-raising activities in support of IUP's athletic program.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach.
Instructional Duties:
  • Provide instruction to student athletes in position technique.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes sport strategy.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes in game analysis.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes regarding specific game plans.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes regarding physical conditioning and strength training.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes in the area of nutrition.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes regarding NCAA rules.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes regarding university and program policies and procedures.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes in leadership & conduct.
  • Provide instruction to student athletes in community responsibility.
  • Provide academic monitoring and counseling to student athletes.
  • Provide instruction to camp attendees.
  • Preparation for instructional activities.
Non-Instructional Duties:
  • Monitor student athlete academic ineligibility.
  • Scouting competition.
  • Monitor compliance with IUP, PSAC, and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Recruit new student athletes through research, networking with high school and AAU coaches.
  • Participate in fundraising activities and other fiscal responsibilities.
  • Other specific duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Position Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree and one year of coaching experience, OR
  • One to three years of professional coaching or professional playing experience.
Candidates must have the communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members.

Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well in the interview(s). 
    

Essential Functions

This position is heavily involved in outdoor activity and has periods of heavy exertion.  Incumbents must have the following abilities:

  • Ability to travel to field locations and meeting/training sites by motor vehicle when required.
  • To work under a variety of adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, dust and snow.
  • To be able to work extended hours under adverse conditions in response to emergency conditions.
  • To work in hazardous situations such as around moving heavy equipment, in and around traffic, at heights, on steep grades, and on ladders and uneven surfaces. 
  • Employee must be able to observe and react to hazardous warnings, back-up alarms, flashing lights, voice commands and hand signals.
  • To perform manual laboring duties such as lifting and carrying various weights.
  • Setting up, operating, testing and measuring equipment. 
  • Using hand tools such as hammers and pry bars, and taking and transporting material samples.
  • Work often requires stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching and prolonged standing.
  • To withstand exposure to chemical agents, exhaust gases and lubricants, solvents, poisonous plants, animals, and insects and potential injuries such as bruises, scrapes, cuts, strains and sprains.
  • To wear all types of required protective gear such as a hard hat, footgear, hearing and eye protection, gloves and respirators.
