General Description of the Position

The Head Men's Baseball Coach at Delaware State University leads all aspects of the men's baseball program, overseeing recruitment, training, game strategy, and program administration.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential Functions
The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

  1. Recruitment: Lead efforts to identify, evaluate, and recruit talented student-athletes to join the men's baseball program.
  2. Training: Develop and implement comprehensive training programs to enhance the team's skills, conditioning, and performance.
  3. Game Strategy: Analyze opponents, develop game plans, and make in-game adjustments to maximize team success.
  4. Player Development: Provide individualized coaching and feedback to student-athletes to improve their skills and performance.
  5. Program Administration: Manage all aspects of the men's baseball program, including scheduling, budget management, compliance with NCAA regulations, and alumni relations.
  6. Academic Support: Support the academic success of student-athletes, monitoring their progress and providing resources for academic support.
  7. Community Engagement: Participate in community outreach activities, promoting the men's baseball program and fostering positive relationships with alumni, donors, and the community.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation using some other combination of skills and abilities:
  1. Baseball Expertise: Extensive knowledge and experience in baseball, including coaching techniques, game strategies, and player development.
  2. Recruitment Skills: Ability to identify and recruit talented student-athletes to the university's men's baseball program.
  3. Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with student-athletes, colleagues, and stake holders.
  4. Leadership Skills: Strong leadership and mentoring abilities to guide and motivate student-athletes.
  5. Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills to manage schedules, travel arrangements, and administrative tasks.
  6. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, staff, alumni, donors, and the community.
  7. Compliance Knowledge: Understanding of NCAA regulations and university policies related to athletics.

Qualification Standards

Bachelor's degree required; previous coaching experience preferred.

The criteria for evaluation in this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Team Performance: 
   - Achieve a minimum winning percentage in the conference and overall games as set by the athletic department.
   - Qualify for conference tournaments and aim to advance to NCAA postseason play.
Recruitment and Retention:
   - Successfully recruit a specified number of talented student-athletes each season, focusing on both athletic ability and academic potential.
   - Maintain high retention rates of student-athletes, ensuring that a majority stay with the program through graduation.
Academic Success: 
   - Ensure that the team's average GPA meets or exceeds the university's academic standards.
   - Achieve a graduation rate for student-athletes that meets or exceeds the university's overall student body graduation rate.
Program Administration:
   - Maintain compliance with all NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations.
   - Manage the team's budget effectively, staying within the allocated budget while ensuring all necessary resources are available for the program's success.
   - Engage in community service and outreach activities, promoting the baseball program and fostering positive relationships with the community and alumni.
