Summary:
The Assistant Athletic Director of Mental Health oversees a comprehensive mental health program and staff that provides mental health services to all university student-athletes. This position plays a vital role in providing supervision to the general mental health and sports psychology services including collaboration with campus and community providers, as well as providing a high level of customer service and communication.
Provide leadership in athlete mental health and wellness. Includes liaisons with campus health services to refer student athletes.
Serves as initial point of referral for all mental health services for student-athletes.
Plans and implements programs and resource strategies in response to the changing needs of the athletic department.
Organizes, supervises, and implements policies for Mental Health Services.
Establishes and cultivates campus-wide networks and community relationships that ensure support for the initiatives of the Mental Health Program.
Develops and implements outreach programming for the Department of Athletics university programs.
Consults with contracted mental health providers to provide high quality care, liaison with mental health community members.
Consults with coaches on student-athlete mental health concerns.
Supervises professional staff coordinating delivery of mental health services.
Serves on divisional and institutional teams and committees.
Design, implement, train, and supervise peer counselors and student leaders in conflict resolution, communication skills and other assigned areas significant to the Department of Athletics.
Supervises, recruits, trains, and evaluates all staff professional/contracted employees within the mental health program.
Provide crisis assessment and intervention including assessment for safety.
Provide counseling services for a small case load for short-term individual counseling.
Consult with network of co-treating providers and work directly with student-athletes to manage crises, develop appropriate crisis prevention and safety plans for an integrated service, as needed.
Establish effective interpersonal relations with coaches, athletes, administration, students, local medical personnel, and the public.
Works with the athletic training staff on coordinating support for injured and recovering student-athletes.
Represent the department at weekly management meetings and other meetings as necessary.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.):
A Master’s Degree in, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field. Doctorate preferred.
3-5 years of supervisory experience working within a university, counseling setting, or athletics department.
Alabama Counseling License in good standing.
