Job Summary

This is a full-time position responsible for providing counseling and therapy to student-athletes experiencing mental health challenges that impede their ability to perform in school and in sport. The position involves consultations with athletic trainers, sports medicine professionals, academic advisors, specialists, coaches, and administrators in the athletic department. This position is critical to the Built4Life service delivery for the more than 600 student-athletes at BYU. The Mental Health Counselor will be part of a Built4Life team that provides a holistic approach to the overall student-athlete experience.

Duties/Expectations:

• Provide individual therapy.Individual therapy includes counseling to student-athletes experiencing common psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, eating disorders, or other difficulties common to university students.
• Outreach/Prevention and Consultation. Must show professional capability in the delivery of multi-modal prevention/outreach and wellness programming. Consultation includes interacting with other professionals, such as athletic trainers and academic advisors, who function in support roles with student-athletes at BYU. These preventive and consultation activities function to help remove barriers to seeking treatment that many student-athletes experience. Appropriate communication and consultation skills are required for this position.
• Participate as a member of specialized, multi-disciplinary treatment teams for student athletes (e.g., Energy Availability, Mental Health Awareness, etc.).
• Maintain appropriate documentation and case notes about individual and consultation sessions.
• Practice and be well-informed of updated NCAA Mental Health Best Practices determined by the NCAA Committee for Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports.
• Attend NCAA Mental Health Conferences.
• Understand and counsel athletic employees regarding foundational principles that support student-athlete mental health.

What Qualifies You to Apply?

Required :

• Master's degree in counseling or a related field (e.g., Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy) - Must have required degree by start date
• Licensed mental health provider with authorization to practice in the state of Utah or ability to obtain Utah license within one year
• All new employees who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be required to hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend, which may be verified during the hiring process

Preferred :

• Doctoral degree in psychology or related field (e.g. Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy)
• Experience working in a college counseling center and/or significant clinical experience working with student-athletes
• Experience with delivery of prevention/outreach programming
• Demonstrated experience and knowledge about consulting with athletic department administration and staff
