The Assistant Athletic Trainer will provide the services for prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports related injuries to SAU student athletes. The Assistant Athletic Trainers will assist the Director of Sports Medicine, under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer in the day-to-day operations of the athletic training department, to include, but not limited to appropriate application of emergency procedures, providing first aid, documentation of care, and communication with coaches and physicians. Candidate will assist the Director of Sports Medicine in providing proper coverage for all SAU athletic events and athletic training room supervision. Candidate will provide practice, game, and travel coverage for assigned sport(s).Key Responsibilities: 1. Team practices and game day events (50%) Provide coverage of practices and athletic competition for assigned sport; Ensure practice facility has the necessary supplies and equipment for student-athletes; Maintain phone access list of special conditions among participating athletes in case of emergency and emergency contact for each student-athlete. Survey the practice facility to ensure safety. Remove dangerous objects. Notify appropriate personnel of repairs needed. Communicate each individual’s practice status each day to student-athlete and coaching staff. Observe practice drills, paying special attention to those with a known injury; respond to any injury situations. Observe practice drills and advise coaching staff of potentially dangerous activities, or situations when an individual should be restrained from participation. Travel to cover athletic competition with designated team when needed; Communicate well with Director of Sports Medicine, Coaches, Head Athletic Trainer and Physicians. 2. Pre-and post-practice treatments (20%) Apply various therapeutic modalities and give instruction for range of motion and flexibility exercises. Apply necessary protection of injured area, including special taping or braces. Clean and dress various abrasions, lacerations, etc. to help prevent infection and to aid the healing process. Evaluate new injuries after practice is completed 3. General athletic training room coverage (10%) Assist in the daily management and operation of the Athletic Training facility; Refer SAU student athletes to the appropriate medical professional under the guidance of administration; Provide a comprehensive sports medicine health care service for student athletes in the areas of preventative medicine, injury assessment, treatment of injuries, and post injury rehabilitation; 4. Administrative (10%) Communicate well with coaches, physicians, Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer; Assist Head Athletic Trainer with the management of facility inventory and supplies; Preview student athlete insurance policies, and file and submit insurance claims; Proper documentation and maintenance of student athlete medical files; Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with the Emergency Action Plan. Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with pre-participation exams (PPE’s) for all SAU student athletes; Assist with the facilitation of COVID-19 protocols 5. Supervision of Staff (5%)Supervise and mentor Work Study/Volunteer Student Athletic Trainers6. Other duties (5%) Assist in the overall function of the Athletics Department with duties as assigned by the Director of Sports Medicine or Head Athletic Trainer. Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments. Assists with seasonal peaks. Required Master’s degree in athletic training or related field, certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC), First Aid certification, and CPR/AED certification for the professional rescuer. Must be eligible for North Carolina State Licensure.
1 – 2 years’ experience as a certified athletic trainer in intercollegiate athletics or comparable work in a sports environment.
