(Job #546692) Athletic Trainer I, 10/12 Months, Assistant Athletic Trainer I, Salary Range: $3,511 - $6,775 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 10/12 pay plan (work 10 months of the year with pay and benefits over 12 months) permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Department. Position Summary:

Under general supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer, the Athletic Trainer I follows established guidelines and procedures in providing the full range of clinical athletic training functions for student-athletes during training and competition, in accordance with the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) guidelines. The Athletic Trainer I also provides injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation for athletic injuries and assists in coverage of athletic practices and contests, including evening and weekend assignments and travel with teams.

Key Responsibilities:

40% - Injury Treatment/Rehabilitation

1. Prevent, recognize, and assess athletic injuries.

• Use a variety of therapeutic modalities in accordance with physician orders including but not limited to heat, cold, light, sound, and electricity, and rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
• Apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries.

1. Inform coaching staff and other health professionals on the status of injuries and treatment plans.
2. Implement rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries using appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments.
3. Monitor rehabilitation plans and progress.
4. Assist with and assign student-athletes for therapy as needed.
5. Consult with more senior Athletic Trainers, physicians, and other health care staff on injuries and treatment plans and coordinate with coaching staff.
6. Maintain equipment and cleanliness of the athletic training and rehabilitation facilities.

20% - Evaluation/Prevention/Conditioning of Injuries

1. Regularly evaluate the physical condition of student athletes. Advise students on how to prevent injuries and maintain their physical condition. Counsel athletes and staff regarding conditioning, athletic training, and rehabilitation. Assist in designing conditioning programs to prevent injuries.

15% - Home & Away Game & Practice Health Care

1. Attend practices and athletic events to provide medical emergency coverage to student athletes. Travel with sports teams to away games as needed.

10%

1. Maintain updated files and accurate medical records of the following: athletic injuries, medical insurance, medical history, injury referrals, conditioning programs, schedules, and other necessary data.

10% - Home & Away Game & Practice Health Care

1. Coordinate clinical and physical appointments between athlete and SHC or outside referral. Inform coaching staff and other healthcare professionals regarding injury status and treatment plans. Daily control of infection and sanitation of the training room by cleaning and disinfecting all equipment, floors, and tables.

5% - Other Duties as Assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

General Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation.
• Full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis.
• Other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and therapeutic massage techniques.
• Effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
• Rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses' governing national collegiate athletic associations pertaining to student-athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety.
• Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens.
• Maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.
• Following insurance procedures.

Skills:

• Strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.

Ability to:

• Determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals.
• Recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid.
• Use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other record keeping functions.
• Work in an environment with competing priorities.
• Communicate with coaches and student-athletes regarding injuries and rehabilitation plans.
• Work outside under varied weather conditions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population, both verbally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Possess and maintain Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer.
2. Possess and maintain valid state-issued driver's license with a clean driving record.
3. Current CPR/AED certification under the guidelines of the NATABOC

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience performing athletic training duties in a collegiate setting.
2. Masters degree in Athletic Training.
