The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) invites applications for an Assistant Director of Athletics, Student-Athlete Development to support student – athletes. In addition, the Assistant Director of Athletics, Student-Athlete Development will play a critical role in supporting the broader strategic priorities of the DIA, and ultimately this position will help foster a life-changing experience for student-athletes.
Since 1892, DIA has operated on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to support its intercollegiate athletic programs. Today, DIA supports 21 intercollegiate varsity sports which compete as a part of the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. DIA provides the resources for over 500 student-athletes to participate at the highest levels of their respective sports. This extensive support ecosystem includes over 35 departments employing over 300 dedicated staff members including 80 plus varsity coaches working collaboratively to provide individualized championship-caliber opportunities to our student-athletes, in the classroom, in the competitive arena, and in personal and professional development, to enhance their growth and life preparation. The DIA mission is to Unify, Develop, Inspire, and Achieve, for the benefit of our student-athletes, our university, and our broader community.
DIA has set forth six strategic priorities to help guide and advance its overarching mission: Championship people, championship mindset; strategic innovation and investment; athletic success; financial sustainability; win championships; community engagement and enrichment. Impact in Your First Year
Within 3 months, you will:
It is expected that in the first three months, the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development become familiar with DIA's mission, as well as policies and procedures. The person in this position should also make an effort to establish relationships with their direct reports, other coaches, student-athletes, administrative staff members, and campus and community partners that they will work with regularly. It will be vital to the success of the unit that they develop a rapport with the Academic Services team to work collaboratively to determine comprehensive programming plans that align with DIA's mission and strategic priorities. They should also begin familiarizing their self with alumni and donors who have been past supporters of student-athlete programs/DIA and student-athletes who have been benefactors of donors' generosity.
Within 6 months, you will:
Within six months, the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development should be comfortable taking on committee work within DIA and activating their direct reports to prioritize the holistic development of student-athletes by identifying gaps in existing programming. They should actively evaluate current program offerings and Ideate new programs that enhance support for student-athletes' preparation for life beyond collegiate athletics. Additionally, there should be improved communication and collaboration with coaches, administrative staff, student-athletes, and campus and community partners to enhance the holistic development of student-athletes. The person in this role should be engaging with other industry professionals to understand resources that the unit/department/student-athletes may benefit from.
By the end of the first year, you will:
After 12 months in this role, the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development should be prepared to implement new programs or enhance existing structures with the goal to elevate overall student-athlete outcomes. There should be consistent measures in place to gather feedback that warrants enhanced engagement from student-athletes and position the unit to improve programming effectiveness. They should have established relationships with donors and be capable of adequately and tactfully articulating measures of success and areas for growth. Moreover, the person in this role should be the face of student-athlete development and a primary resource for coaches on recruiting visits, having knowledge of what sets Illinois Athletics' student-athlete development programs. Lastly, they should be able to develop a master calendar for all cyclical student-athlete development programs and proactively collaborate with units to coordinate events.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 6/17/2024. The Minimum salary for this position is $80,000.
