Xavier University of Louisiana seeks a highly motivated, student-centered, and mission-driven professional to serve as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. The Assistant Coach supports the Head Men’s Basketball Coach in all aspects of administering a competitive intercollegiate basketball program consistent with the mission and values of Xavier University of Louisiana and the rules and regulations of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC).
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, student-athlete development, integrity, and the holistic formation of Xavier student-athletes. The Assistant Coach will play an integral role in recruiting and retaining talented student-athletes, practice and game preparation, player development, program operations, and creating a team culture reflective of Xavier’s Catholic identity and historic mission as an HBCU.
At Xavier, coaching is understood as more than the pursuit of competitive success. Coaches are educators, mentors, and leaders who contribute to the development of the whole student. The Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach must embrace Xavier’s mission to promote a more just and humane society and demonstrate an ability to translate that mission into the daily experiences of student-athletes through mentorship, accountability, leadership development, community, service, and care for the dignity of each person. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
· Master’s degree.
· Previous collegiate coaching experience, preferably at the NAIA, NCAA, or NJCAA level.
· Successful experience recruiting student-athletes at the collegiate level.
· Established recruiting relationships within Louisiana, the Gulf South, Southeast, or other strategically important recruiting areas.
· Experience with video analysis, scouting technology, basketball analytics, and recruiting platforms.
· Demonstrated experience contributing to a successful collegiate basketball program.
· Experience supporting the academic, leadership, and personal development of collegiate student-athletes.
· Demonstrated ability to recruit, mentor, develop, and retain student-athletes within a mission-driven collegiate environment.
· Demonstrated appreciation for the distinctive educational mission of Xavier University of Louisiana as a Catholic historically Black university and an ability to contribute positively to that mission through coaching, mentoring, leadership, and service.
Availability for early mornings and late evenings along with weekends and holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Assist the Head Coach with the planning, organization, and execution of practices, individual workouts, team training, and skill-development activities.
· Provide instruction and coaching designed to develop student-athletes technically, tactically, physically, and mentally.
· Assist with game preparation, including scouting opponents, film review, development of scouting reports, and implementation of offensive and defensive strategies.
· Provide in-game coaching and other bench responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach.
· Utilize appropriate video, analytics, and technology resources to support player development, scouting, and team preparation.
· Assist in evaluating individual and team performance and identifying opportunities for continued development.
Recruiting and Roster Development
· Identify, evaluate, recruit, and assist in the enrollment of prospective student-athletes who demonstrate the academic ability, athletic talent, character, and personal qualities necessary to succeed at Xavier.
· Develop and maintain productive relationships with prospective student-athletes, families, high school and junior college coaches, club programs, and other individuals involved in the recruiting process.
· Travel as necessary to evaluate prospective student-athletes and represent Xavier at recruiting events, tournaments, showcases, and other activities.
· Assist with campus visits and effectively communicate the academic, athletic, cultural, and student-life opportunities available at Xavier University of Louisiana.
· Maintain accurate recruiting records and assist with monitoring prospective student-athletes through the admissions, financial aid, eligibility, and enrollment processes.
· Support the Head Coach in developing and executing an effective roster-management and retention strategy.
Student-Athlete Success and Development
· Promote the academic success, personal development, health, well-being, and graduation of men’s basketball student-athletes.
· Maintain regular communication with student-athletes and collaborate with Athletics staff and appropriate University offices regarding academic progress, eligibility, student support, and overall well-being.
· Reinforce expectations regarding class attendance, academic performance, conduct, sportsmanship, accountability, and responsible decision-making.
· Serve as a mentor and positive role model for student-athletes, helping prepare them for leadership and service beyond intercollegiate athletics.
· Support team participation in community service, leadership development, campus engagement, and NAIA Champions of Character initiatives.
· Contribute to a team environment characterized by discipline, mutual respect, accountability, belonging, and care for one another.
Program Administration and Operations
· Assist with the daily administration of the men’s basketball program, including scheduling, travel, equipment, facilities, recruiting activities, team meals, practice logistics, and other operational responsibilities as assigned.
· Assist with basketball camps, clinics, alumni activities, community engagement, fundraising, and other program-related events.
· Develop positive working relationships with Athletics staff, faculty, University administrators, alumni, supporters, and community partners.
· Represent Xavier University of Louisiana and the men’s basketball program professionally at University, conference, community, and alumni events.
· Participate in departmental meetings, professional development, and other University activities as requested.
· Perform additional duties related to the men’s basketball program and Athletics and Recreation as assigned by the Head Coach or Director of Athletics.
Compliance and Institutional Responsibility
· Maintain a thorough working knowledge of and comply with all applicable Xavier University of Louisiana, Southern States Athletic Conference, and NAIA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
· Assist with monitoring student-athlete eligibility, recruiting activities, playing and practice seasons, and other areas of athletics compliance.
· Immediately report potential violations of University, conference, or NAIA rules through appropriate institutional channels.
· Demonstrate the highest standards of ethical conduct, professional judgment, confidentiality, sportsmanship, and integrity.
· Promote an environment that prioritizes student-athlete safety, dignity, well-being, and development. |
