Job Description

The University of Iowa Department of Athletics seeks applications for an Assistant Rowing Coach. The Assistant Coach is responsible for providing administrative, instructional and coaching assistance to the Head Coach with the purpose of building a successful, competitive intercollegiate sports program that also retains and graduates student-athletes. This position will be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. This is a full-time (at-will and FLSA-exempt) position which includes full University benefits. The University of Iowa is an NCAA Division I institution and a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Department of Athletics manages 22 varsity sports programs and related events with a workforce of approximately 250 regular employees and 300 temporary employees. Responsibilities: The Assistant Rowing Coach is responsible for the following duties, including but not limited to:

  • On-water and ergometer coaching of student-athletes, focusing on technique, strength, and endurance development.
  • Developing and implementing training plans.
  • Identifying and recruiting prospective student-athletes, both domestically and internationally, adhering to NCAA and Big Ten Conference rules and regulations, including: Identifying and evaluating international rowing talent; Understanding and navigating international academic equivalencies and admission requirements; Developing strategies for effective international outreach and communication; Adhering to specific NCAA regulations pertaining to international amateurism and eligibility.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with recruits, their families, and high school/club coaches globally.
  • Assisting with team travel logistics, including transportation, accommodation, and meals.
  • Monitoring academic progress and providing support to student-athletes to ensure academic success.
  • Assisting with equipment maintenance and management.
  • Fostering a positive team culture emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.
  • Participating in fundraising and alumni engagement activities as needed.
  • Performing administrative duties as assigned by the Head Coach.
