Job Description
Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas, a proud member of the NCAA Division I and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
The Assistant Softball Coach plays a pivotal role in supporting the Head Coach to develop and manage a competitive NCAA Division I softball program. This full-time, 12-month position focuses on fostering player development, teamwork, and excellence both on and off the field. Key responsibilities include assisting with coaching, recruiting, game day preparation, organizing camps, and coordinating travel logistics. Additionally, the role includes serving as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
Work hours: Mon-Fri; 8 AM-5 PM or as work requirements indicate; which includes nights and weekends.
Must have the ability to work remotely at the request of the university in times of inclement weather or other special circumstances.
Job Responsibilities
50% Coaching/Instruction:
Coaches student athletes individually and in groups and demonstrates game techniques.
Develops game strategy and position assignments.
Plans coaching and practice sessions in accordance with NCAA and Conference regulations.
Instructs student athletes on physical health, team concepts and safety.
Instructs student athletes in the rules and fundamentals of their sport.
Monitors and maintains the discipline and conduct of student athletes to support the image and reputation of the athletics program.
Ensures adherence to all Association, Conference, and University rules by student athletes and supporting staff.
Supervises student athletes during practices, games, and travel.
25% Supports Player Recruitment and Evaluation:
Oversees recruiting efforts, travel arrangements, program budgeting, equipment management and game day preparations.
Promotes the athletic program and specific sport through community events, public speaking, fundraising, and marketing.
20% Administrative Tasks:
5% Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in physical education, sport science, sports medicine, sports management, recreation and fitness, athletic training, kinesiology or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Three years of coaching experience at high school, collegiate, or professional level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques associated with softball required.
Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate complex tasks and procedures.
Excellent organization and supervision skills.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to motivate and inspire athletes.
Willingness and ability to work effectively with all campus and associated constituencies.
Have a working familiarity with computer systems (including social media).

Master's degree
Previous Division I college coaching experience
Other requirements
Work is normally performed in a game field or training room setting with some travel to/from away matches required
GENERAL EXPECTATIONS OF POSITION:
Conduct is expected to be professional and courteous. Duties and responsibilities are to be carried out in a manner which promotes and is consistent with the intrinsic goals of Tarleton State University.
This is a full-time, twelve-month position annually.

The target base annual salary range is commensurate with experience and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
