| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director’s Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department’s guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.

| Position Summary |
The Athletic Outdoor Facilities Unit is responsible for the administration, management, and maintenance of all Athletic Facilities, including Kenan Stadium, Boshamer Stadium, Fetzer Field, Navy Fields, Henry stadium, Belk Track, Eddie Smith Field House, McCaskill Soccer Center, Anderson Softball Stadium, Finley Athletic Fields, Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, Carmichael Arena, Ranson-Hammrick Cross Country Course, University Lake Boathouse, 220 Finley, 216 Finley, as well as the associated buildings and grounds. These facilities are used by the Athletics Department’s 28 varsity programs, University organizations, and the local community. This position is responsible for all matters relating to turfgrass management and directing a unit that includes fields and grounds maintenance. Directs all work projects and inspects completed work to ensure conformance to specifications (ACC, NCAA) and any contract requirements. Exercises authority to evaluate and direct work with outside contractors to provide services for department fields and grounds. Responsible for the planning and supervision of competition field venues for all approved events. Work may involve reviewing contracts to ascertain service, machinery, and workforce requirements; answering inquiries from potential customers regarding methods, materials, and price ranges; and preparing estimates according to labor, material, and machinery costs. This position has a responsibility for demonstrating a clear knowledge of the complex issues of facility/field construction, management and maintenance in order to make real-time decisions that are in the best interest of the coaches, student athletes, and related constituent groups. It has responsibility to abide by all UNC, ACC, and NCAA regulations.
With the Director of Athletic Grounds & Turf Management provides review and assist in establishing, developing and revising goals and objectives for a specialized turfgrass management program/work operation and equipment operation program for management of all athletic fields.
Assist in budget planning for outdoor facilities unit.
Independently determine best management practices. Maintain working inventory of all materials used; accurate allocation of chemicals in keeping with EPA standards; ensures proper inventory records to plan for purchase of chemicals, fertilizers, maintenance accessories and supplies.
Responds to coaches needs and advise and consult to ensure accuracy and understanding of all details. Make recommendations for improvement. Develop turfgrass maintenance tools applicable to the sport program area(s). Maintain awareness of current and emerging technologies related to field maintenance and communication. Relay sport program information and explain processes correctly to coaches, administrators, and staff.
Assist with the management and supervision of 9 – 11 athletic grounds employees on daily field preparation. Coordinate painting/fertilizing and cultural practices for all game and practice fields. Assign and manage crews responsible for aerifying, top-dressing and sod work on athletic fields.

| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Demonstrated ability to formulate and implement proper turfgrass maintenance schedules and management practices. Ability to recognize, identify, and treat turfgrass insects and diseases that could damage the quality of turf. Demonstrated communication skills and ability to to motivate and direct employees. Demonstrated technical knowledge and understanding of a variety of specialized machinery. Knowledge and experience with fertilizer and chemical spread formulas used in turf maintenance. Baseball or softball field maintenance experience required. Demonstrated ability to maintain all dirt areas to NCAA specifications to include game mound, home plate area, bullpen mounds, infield dirt, baselines, and warning track. Ability to communicated with coaches, staff, vendors, contractors, etc. A valid NC driver’s license required.

| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Associated degree in turfgrass management or a related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience and substantial work experience with stadium/athletic fields maintenance, facility management for major sports events, grounds maintenance and crew supervision. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with boom sprayer, fairway reel mower, and utility tractor. Thorough understanding and ability to manage crews who perform aerifying, top-dressing, and sod work in athletic fields. Pesticide applicator and respirator (general use). A valid pesticide license preferred.
