Department Summary

Services for Student-Athletes provides comprehensive academic support to more than 500 student-athletes attending the University of Oregon. The department is open 7 days a week providing services such as support with class scheduling, academic advising, comprehensive support for a variety of learning needs, tutor appointments, math and science labs, quiet study tables, and up-to-date computer labs.

Position Summary

The Associate Director for Learning Support reports directly to the Director of Academic Support. As the Associate Director, you'll help create an inclusive and welcoming learning space for student-athletes while leading a team of dedicated and passionate professional learning specialists. You will oversee the SSA learning specialist team, which serves to support the varied learning needs of student-athletes. You will also have your own caseload, functioning in an academic support role for student-athletes.

You may serve as a consultant to the teaching faculty and campus administration on issues that relate to student-athlete academic success. You will monitor all student success records in collaboration with the Associate Director of Advising and the Director of Academic Support and are responsible for the development and implementation of student-athlete academic progress reports at the end of each quarter with proposed recommendations for furthered student-athlete success.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Three years of experience providing individual tutoring support, study skills assistance, time management strategies, or other learning support instruction to high school or college students or related experience.
• Experience working with students experiencing academic challenges for any reason, including but not limited to a lack of academic preparedness, low motivation and engagement, or a diagnosed learning disability.
• Supervisory work experience.

Professional Competencies

• Proficient in recognizing and addressing the educational and social developmental requirements of student-athletes.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with learning specialists and academic advising staff members.
• Ability to help students with motivation and engagement around academics.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
• Effective interpersonal communication skills.
• Understanding of basic computer programs and applications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in education or related field.
• General knowledge of the organizational structure and operational procedures in institutions of higher learning with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with university teaching faculty and administration.
• Three years of experience working with student-athletes at the post-secondary level.
• Teaching experience.
• Experience with educationally under-prepared students OR experience with high school/college students who have significant challenges related to learning disabilities.
• Familiarity with academic assessments, current educational research, and study skill strategies.
• Working knowledge of NCAA academic regulations.
• Experience serving the needs of diverse populations.
