Responsible for assisting in the development and programming of all services related to student life, including academic planning, major and career counseling, academic monitoring, academic assistance and personal development. Reports To: Senior Associate Athletic Director, Academic Services.

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:
Participate as an integral part of the Academic Services for Student-Athletes unit to provide academic support services to student-athletes. This includes working closely with the other counselors and administrators in the Academic Services unit, participating in Academic Services staff meetings and staff development sessions, and teaching classes or leading workshops as needed.
Coordinate advising meetings with new student-athletes by working with Faculty advisors, Chairs, Deans, and advising personnel during the summer, fall, and spring orientation. Review the schedule planning of these students to make sure that it is in consonance with intended major, previous academic preparation, and athletic demands for the term.
Teaching Responsibilities could include the following instruction: Course – Academic Learning Strategies; Workshops – Note taking; Textbook Reading; Test Taking; Writing Skills; Time Management; Motivation/Goal Setting/Communication Skills; NCAA Continuing Eligibility.
Maintains a complete knowledge of Delaware State University, Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference, NCAA rules as possible in order to assure that the department operations involving services for student-athletes are in compliance.
Maintains contact with assigned student-athletes, including scheduled conferences so as to keep coaches informed of any potential academic and/or eligibility problems. Maintains contact with coaches of assigned student-athletes concerning all aspects of the student-athletes’ academic progress, eligibility and personal development and meets with respective coaches on a regular basis.
Monitors the academic progress of assigned student-athletes during the semester and summer terms. Maintain contact with faculty members by phone, e-mail and campus mail, to assist with this process. Promote good working relationships with faculty and administrators to enhance the image of the Academic Services unit and the Athletics Department across campus.
Coordinate the distribution, follow-up, and evaluation of academic progress of student-athletes.
Aids in the recruiting process as requested by the coaches. This includes arranging faculty conferences and meeting with prospects and their parents.
Monitors the Athletic Department’s class attendance policy for assigned student-athletes and notifies appropriate faculty of student absences for athletic travel and participation.

Assists in identifying those student-athletes who are in a position to be nominated for NCAA, MEAC Conference, and Delaware State University academic and leadership awards.
Assist students with registration and drop/add during the early registration periods. This includes not only proper course selection, but also working out conflicts with practice times, etc. It involves working effectively with the Registrar, department chair, and instructors.
Supervises study hall during assigned hours.
Able to perform other duties as assigned (for example, “collection of data for the purposes of End of the Year annual reporting – institution, conference, and NCAA, alike. Also, possesses the ability to work irregular hours during the work week, Monday through Friday before 8:30 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m. and also on weekends, when necessary).

The candidate must possess the following skills and abilities to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations:

Must be task driven and goal focused and possess an ability to work in high pressure environment. Candidates must demonstrate working understanding of MEAC conference and NCAA Division I guidelines.
Ability to perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualification Standards
Education: Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, or other related field preferred.
