Occupational Summary:
The Athletic Director is responsible for the administration and direction of the total intercollegiate athletic program, fielding 15 collegiate and intercollegiate in NCAA Division II, and 3 Club level teams (Men’s Bowling, Esports, Cheer and Dance), comprising over 400 student-athletes. The Athletic Director effectively represents the NCAA’s unique attributes of fair play, character, learning, balance, spirit, and community.

This position is responsible for cultivating and maintaining the institution's Catholic identity and its mission to empower graduates to transform society. As a member of the Newman community, the staff member will join with the institution's sponsors, the Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC Sisters), to witness God's love in Mission to empower others, foster oneness, celebrate life, form right relationships, and walk as compassionate companions. Additionally, this position contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other faiths, cultures, or backgrounds.
Work Performed: 1. Develops plans, policies, procedures, and programs that comply with the University, the MIAA Conference, and the NCAA rules and regulations, which promote the mission of the Athletic Department, the University’s high standard of academic excellence, and the overall student-athlete experience. Ensures all employees in the Athletics Department exhibit a high degree of personal integrity in support of the University’s Mission. 2. Builds budgets for 15 NCAA Division II sports programs and 3 Athletic Department Sponsored club sports. The Director of Athletics assists in the control of expenditures within the allocated Operational Budget funding and oversees the NCAA/University athletic scholarship model implemented by the University. 3. Works closely with the VP for Enrollment Management on policies for recruitment of student athletes and approval of all athletic aid awards. 4. In consultation with the President, develops a compelling vision for the future of athletics at Newman University and partners with the NU Office of University Advancement to identify, engage with, and invite from the University’s most generous athletic donors and community partners philanthropic support for that vision. Fundraising to support athletics is a considerable responsibility. 5. Manages and oversees men’s and women’s sports through each coach and senior athletic staff, including the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). Ensures that coaching and administrative staff actively support the Department and University’s joint commitment to academic/athletic achievement for each student-athlete.

Consults with the department director of NCAA Compliance and the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) regarding the interpretation of applicable rules and clarifies conflicts of opinion with the President. Reports to the President and assists the Director of Compliance, the FAR, and the SWA in investigating all cases where a possible violation has or may have occurred. 7. Promotes NU Athletic Excellence on the National, Conference (MIAA) and the local levels for the men’s and women’s programs, to include coordinating the recruitment, selection, and yearly evaluation of all coaches. 8. Works with the SWA to ensure equity and diversity in all areas of the athletic programs, and to address any concerns about women’s sports at Newman University through the SWA. 9. Develops and implements long-term planning strategies, regarding not only fiscal needs for operations and capital improvements but also internal goals for strengthening the Department through staff expansion and program development, contracts, salaries, and incentives. 10. Develops budget guidelines, approves budget appropriations for each area, and monitors conformance to budgets as approved by the Vice President of Finance, the President, and The University Board of Trustees. 11. Oversees the overall athletic department-wide budget operations, with the assistance of the Athletic Department staff. The Director of Athletics will have overall responsibilities for finance management and monitoring of Athletic Facilities. 12. Develops and implements programs to increase revenue sources for the Department. 13. Serves as the primary spokesperson of the Department promoting the philosophy and mission of the NU NCAA DII Athletics Programs with faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, donors, sponsors, media, and the general public. 14. Along with the President, the Director of Athletics will represent the University at NCAA, MIAA Conference, and local/campus meetings and conventions relative to NU Athletics. 15. Establishes and periodically refines departmental organizational structure to ensure the effective management of human resources. Approves all athletic employee appointments and/or contracts for the coaches, trainers, administrative staff, and other personnel who work for the Department of Athletics. Supervises their training and works to evaluate their contribution to the Department regularly. 16. Monitors and evaluates the condition of our NU athletic facilities, including inspection for safety, as well as recommends through comparison with other conferences, the MIAA Conference, and national standards, any necessary changes to meet the standards and improve the student-athlete experience at NU. 17. Maintains open communication channels with students, faculty, administrators, alumni, donors, sponsors, and friends of the University. Handles all student-athlete issues. 18. Has direct responsibility for the negotiation of all Radio/TV contracts for coaches’ shows and athletic events staged in NU athletic facilities to ensure compliance with University and MIAA Conference rules and regulations. 19. Coordinates the formulation of annual reports to the President, The University, and the NCAA on the present status and future plans for the University’s NCAA D II athletics programs. 20. Provides additional services as directed by the President.
Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training: 1. Bachelor’s Degree required (Master’s Degree preferred) with 3 years of administrative experience (NCAA, private institution, Division II preferred). 2. Must be able to understand and be able to articulate the proper role of intercollegiate athletics, and how the department flourishes/fits within a small, liberal arts/pre-professional university.
Physical Requirements: 1. Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 50 pounds. 2. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, calculators, the telephone, and other office equipment. 3. Requires normal range of hearing, speaking, and vision. 4.
