The Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Iowa Health Care is seeking an Athletic Trainer to provide direct patient care in two different settings, including the physician practice and community outreach settings. For approximately 6 months of the year, this position will support a local professional hockey team, including home and away contests, practices, and travel. For the remaining months of the year, this position will support the physician practice clinic setting. This position will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team and provide direct assistance to other medical providers such as physicians, advanced practice providers, physical therapists, medical assistants, and registered nurses in providing care for our patients.

Physician Practice responsibilities to include, but not limited to:

· Perform initial patient assessment including medical history and physical examination.

· Present patient to supervising provider including history, physical exam, pertinent test results, and working diagnosis.

· Collaborate with attending provider to determine appropriate treatment plan, communicate with patient, and provide further home exercise/rehabilitation instruction as needed.

· Collaborate with attending provider to apply or remove splints/casts/braces and fit crutches. Provide product education.

· Remove sutures and provide appropriate wound care and dressing changes.

· Assist physician in procedures as needed including preparing materials for pre- and post-injections and sutures, and preparation of patients’ treatment site.

· Document clinic patient visit according to documentation policies. Collect data and transcribe in the electronic medical record for LIP with appropriate cosign.

· Develop and distribute ongoing patient centered educational information including exercise instruction, gait training, wound care and concussion management per the treating provider.

· Coordinate and prepare patient medical records and imaging from outside providers prior to appointments to expedite clinic efficiency.

· Communicate via compliant phone/electronic means with patient, family, and their medical staff to follow up and enhance continuity of care.

· Knowledge of health care policies for all clinical practices and applicable laws and regulations governing proper clinical practice; ability to demonstrate ethical behavior in diverse situations.

· May serve as a preceptor for the University of Iowa Athletic Training Residency Program.

Hockey Responsibilities to include, but not limited to:

· Evaluation and management of musculoskeletal injuries, concussion, and other injury/illness common to the physically active population.

· Provide practice/competition surveillance, injury recognition and evaluation, initial first aid treatment, injury management and patient education, preventive taping, and padding

· Provide referral for medical care as deemed necessary, establish treatment, or return to participation plans, communicate care with health care team, patient/participant, family, coaches, and staff.

· Establish administrative procedures to provide emergency plans, risk management, equipment and supply inventory, and documentation of services.

· Provide a specialized level of clinical/technical service for care coordination and/or health professions education. Maintain and update equipment and supplies used in providing specialty care or services.

· Communicate detailed medical information and health education to a variety of audiences.

· Collaborate with others on the health care team related to clinical/technical specification to assure safe and effective delivery of care.

· Follow/apply policies/documentation requirements. Participate in Quality Assurance. Report variances and work to address them.

· Knowledge of the relevance of health information and appropriate documentation methods; ability to record medical histories, symptoms, vital signs, medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, tests, and medical results in written or electronic format.

**Required qualifications:**
· Professional degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE accredited program
· Minimum of 1 year of relevant, related experience
· Board Certified Athletic Trainer
· Iowa Athletic Trainer license upon commencement
· CPR/BLS certification
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
**Desired qualifications:**
· Master’s degree in athletic training or related field if professional degree was BS or BA
· Clinical experience in the physician practice setting
· Clinical experience working within the sport of ice hockey
· 3 to 5 years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer
