Job Description
The Staff Counselor - Athletics Mental Health Specialist provides specialized counseling services to Davidson College student-athletes. This role involves delivering counseling and crisis services, conducting relevant training, and offering consultation and educational outreach to student-athletes, coaches, and athletics department staff. The counselor will collaborate with various stakeholders, including parents, physicians, faculty, deans, and on/off-campus counseling services, to ensure comprehensive care and support for student-athletes personal, academic, and athletic success. The counselor will also be instrumental in developing and implementing counseling service policies and procedures tailored to the needs of scholar-athletes.
Provide individual and group counseling focusing on personal, social, career, and academic development.
Conduct crisis intervention services, including screening, consultation, and safety assessments.
Offer limited follow-up counseling services as necessary and make appropriate referrals.
Evaluate student-athletes in individual and group settings.
Manage crisis situations, triage cases and provide walk-in emergency services.
Maintain accurate and confidential clinical records.
Implement mental skills training programs (e.g., goal setting, visualization, concentration, anxiety management) to enhance athletic performance.
Use technology and social media to foster an effective and effect overall experience for scholar-athletes and department team members.
Collaborate with parents, department personnel, physicians, faculty, deans, residence life staff, and other relevant parties to provide quality care.
Work closely with the Davidson College Sports Medicine Staff, including athletic trainers, physicians, and the Center for Student Health & Well-Being.
Participate in clinical care team meetings and other staff meetings as requested.
Outreach Duties:
Plan, conduct, and evaluate outreach programs to facilitate student development.
Develop and deliver workshops and seminars on mental health topics relevant to student-athletes, such as stress management, resilience, and coping strategies.
Conduct workshops and team-building exercises focused on performance psychology.
Provide training for coaches and athletic staff on recognizing and addressing mental health issues.
Participate in ongoing professional development.
Supervise mental health treatment, prevention, and education programs.
Other Duties:
Adhere to all written policies, procedures, and guidelines of Davidson College, the Department of Athletics, the NCAA, and all applicable conferences or associations.
Collaborate with coaches, athletic trainers, academic advisors, and other staff to support student-athletes holistic development.
Serve as a consultant to coaching staff on team dynamics, communication, and leadership issues.
Work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and travel as required.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Experience:
Master’s degree in counseling, social work, sports psychology, marriage and family therapy, or a terminal degree in another appropriate human services field.
Licensed in the State of North Carolina in a relevant field or licensed in another state and eligible for North Carolina licensure.
Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with athletes in a clinical or athletic setting.
Experience providing mental health services, crisis intervention, and performance enhancement strategies.
At least two years of counseling experience.
Experience in counseling, crisis services, and quality outreach programming.
Ability to counsel a diverse student population and adapt to various backgrounds and cultures.
Preferred Education/Experience:
Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Counseling Education, or Social Work with specialized training in sports psychology.
Strong understanding of the unique pressures and challenges faced by collegiate athletes.
Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Proficiency in assessment and therapeutic intervention techniques.
Knowledge of NCAA regulations and compliance issues related to mental health services.
Experience in short-term counseling and interest in working with diverse and/or underrepresented college student populations.
Expertise in outreach programming and consultation skills.
Knowledge of current research in sports psychology, counseling, and college student development.
Experience working with a student-athlete population in a Division I athletics department.
Interest/experience in treating eating disorders and providing alcohol and other drug assessments and counseling.
Experience working in a college counseling center setting.
Knowledge and experience in managing professional boundaries and ethics.
