Position

The Head Coach is expected to serve as the public face of the program, creating and maintaining a positive public image while recruiting and training Division I student-athletes to compete at the highest level possible. This position must also lead and maintain a Division I program through recruiting, on-field teaching techniques, scheduling, monitor academic progress, budget management, fundraising, as well as promoting the sport throughout the University and local community. This position shall have a strong working knowledge and understanding of all NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues. Any violation of a conference or NCAA regulation, or University policy, could cause dismissal of a participant or staff member, as well as create negative publicity and/or conference or NCAA standings to the program and institution.

Essential Functions

Developing and maintaining a competitive Division I intercollegiate baseball program. Responsible for hiring, supervising, and evaluating baseball coaching staff. Directing all aspects of baseball staff in recruiting, scheduling, travel, practice, and competitions. Significant administrative responsibilities including the management of personnel and operations in the baseball office which includes budget planning, maintenance, and monitoring. Evaluating and recruiting qualified student-athletes to the University of Minnesota whose athletic skills make them highly competitive and whose academic abilities make them good candidates for meaningful academic experience and graduation from the University of Minnesota. Assisting in monitoring the academic performance and the physical development of student athletes. Working with academic counselors, athletic trainers, and the strength and conditioning coach to help student-athletes achieve full potential in each area. Establishment and maintenance of effective relationships within the athletics department, the University, community, booster clubs, alumni, high school coaches, media, and the general public.

Represent in a positive fashion the University and its athletic programs in private and public forums. Commit to adhering to all rules and regulations of the Department, the University, the Big Ten Conference, and the NCAA. This should be a full-time mind-set for the successful Coach.

The Head Coach position is responsible for all teaching and instruction provided to student-athletes. Responsible for sport budget management and accounts as assigned. Each of these functions entails decision-making that requires discretion and a significant degree of independent judgment. The coach must develop and maintain a competitive schedule that will allow the team to prepare and compete successfully in the conference, as well as in post-season play. Assist in advancing the department's mission, vision, and strategic plan including its commitment to equity and diversity. Requires significant influence and communication with executive leadership. Problems faced are frequently complex and multidimensional, requiring broad-based consideration of variables that impact multiple areas of the organization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of NCAA Rules – This position shall have a strong working knowledge and understanding of all NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues.
