Position Summary

This is a full-time, ten-month position working with 37 club sports teams. The certified athletic trainer works to evaluate, treat, educate, prevent, and rehabilitate orthopedic injuries. The AT makes referrals to Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center & Sacred Heart University Health Services, along with local physical therapy whenever deemed necessary. The AT provides injury evaluation & rehabilitation for patients referred by Sacred Heart University Health Services, when applicable. The AT is responsible for all injury documentation, record keeping, facility maintenance, scheduling, & equipment/supply upkeep.  

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

• The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention of athletic injuries; the maintenance of the health and well-being; and the recuperation and rehabilitation following illness, injury, or surgery of all players. 
• Sports will be assigned on a year to year basis.
• Provide coverage to other club sports as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer for Club Sports.

• Sports will be assigned on a year to year basis.
• Provide coverage to other club sports as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer for Club Sports.
• Attend and travel with teams for away playoff tournaments, games and matches.
• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with all insurance paperwork for all club sports athletes which includes but not limited to filing, preparing injury reports and preparing all necessary paperwork for secondary insurance carrier.
• Assist in treatment and evaluation of all club sport athletes during normal club sports treatment hours (Monday-Thursday).
• Administer therapeutic techniques & modalities, including but not limited to ultrasound, therapeutic massage, electrical stimulation, hydrotherapy, cryotherapy, as well as manual rehabilitation exercises within the context of the rehabilitation protocol.
• Prepare evaluations for all club sports athletes who have been injured.
• Work in conjunction w/ Sacred Heart University Health Services and club sport coaches to screen for possible eating and exercise concerns with clients, and to ensure safe programming & appropriate consultations.
• Supervise any Athletic Training students that are assigned.
• Responsible for follow-up calls on all accident reports filled out by Club sports department. The accident reports are processed when an individual sustains an injury at a time when the AT is unavailable or not on the premise.
• Prepare athletes daily for competition and practice by taping, bandaging or bracing to prevent and protect athletes.
• Meet with coaches to discuss any injuries and updates on student-athlete injuries/rehab.
• Maintain professional relationship with Director of Athletic Training, as well as certified Athletic trainers that are employed by the Sacred Heart University Athletics Department.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Attributes

• Bachelor’s Degree required; master’s degree preferred.
• BOC Certified Athletic Trainer
• CT state licensure eligible
• CPR/First Aid/AED certification for the professional rescuer

Unusual Working Conditions

• Evening & weekend scheduling is variable & dependent on predetermined practices, games, and events.
• Required travel with teams for away playoff tournaments, games and matches.
