Under administrative direction, the Director of Athletic Human Resources is responsible for leading a comprehensive human resources program that aligns with the mission and strategic objectives of Intercollegiate Athletics. This role involves overseeing all HR services, including HR operations, recruitment, training and organizational development, performance management, employee relations, policy interpretation, and creating and implementing programs that support academic professionals, civil service staff, extra help employees, graduate assistants, and student employees. Additionally, the Director of Athletic Human Resources offers guidance and expertise to Athletics leadership, managers, and employees on complex HR matters.

Job Summary

Under administrative direction, the Director of Athletic Human Resources is responsible for leading a comprehensive human resources program that aligns with the mission and strategic objectives of Intercollegiate Athletics. This role involves overseeing all HR services, including HR operations, recruitment, training and organizational development, performance management, employee relations, policy interpretation, and creating and implementing programs that support academic professionals, civil service staff, extra help employees, graduate assistants, and student employees. Additionally, the Director of Athletic Human Resources offers guidance and expertise to Athletics leadership, managers, and employees on complex HR matters.

Job Responsibilities 

• Partner with Athletics leadership to develop long and short-term goals and objectives for the overall human resources program in support of Athletics strategic and operational goals.
• Direct, supervise, and manage the work of Athletics HR team members to ensure HR goals are met. Provide mentoring, guidance, and feedback to support career development.
• Provide leadership and expertise to senior leaders, managers, and employees in all areas of human resources, including employee and labor relations, professional development, and engagement, recruiting, performance management, and compensation.
• Serve as the liaison to various campus offices such as UIC HR, Labor and Employee Relations, the Office of Access and Equity, and Legal Counsel to address HR matters. Act as departmental expert on compensation, benefits, training/development, employee/labor relations, and UIC human resource applications.
• Provide expertise on human resource policies and issues by answering questions about policy and procedures, advising managers and supervisors, and consulting on employee performance issues and discipline processes. Develop policies as needed to ensure compliance with university- and state-mandated training and reporting.
• Oversee all facets of recruitment for various employee classifications, including Academic Professionals, Civil Service, Graduate Assistants, and student employees, while ensuring compliance with University Policies and the rules set by the State Universities Civil Service System. Responsibilities include creating and maintaining job descriptions, coordinating with Search Committees, evaluating recruitment sources for effective advertising, scheduling meetings, and interviews, and communicating with candidates. Collaborate with the Director on job offers and negotiations. 
• Director shall oversee multi-year coaching contracts.
• Director shall help ensure UIC athletics adheres to NCAA compliance, rules and regulations.
  Oversee and continually improve operations and workflows for all Athletics HR processes (i.e., HRIS transactions, onboarding, offboarding, payroll, leaves of absence, etc.). Develop policies as needed to support operations.
• Enter and approve HFRE transactions, timesheets, salary planner, pay adjustments, overcompensation requests, FMLA and Disability requests. Process employment changes, including promotions, reclassifications, summer appointments, and various leaves. Execute Webtime Entry for Pay Civil Service, Extra Help, and student employees. Update and maintain all leave reports.
• Manage employee onboarding and retention.
• Develop and coordinate employee programs to support professional development and engagement and foster an inclusive work environment.
• Develop and work with campus HR to provide reports and data analysis to Athletics leaders and stakeholders for compensation analysis and recommendations, tracking of HR metrics, and evaluation of HR programs and activities.

• Attend and participate in Campus Practice Group meetings to stay abreast of current laws, processes, and trends impacting HR.

• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree
• Minimum of 5 years of related and progressive human resources experience.
• Previous supervisory experience.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate a high level of discretion.
• Attention to detail.
• Strong critical-thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to identify organizational and business needs and drive continuous improvements.
• Excellent organization, administrative, and project management skills to prioritize and address multiple tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a public academic institution.
• Extensive knowledge of principles and procedures used in human resources.
• Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, and/or regulations affecting public human resources administration.
• Ability to  develop a broad understanding of those of UIC.
• Skill in reviewing and formulating/revising human resources policies and procedures.
• Ability to exercise control over the implementation of the policies and procedures.

Ability to organize human resources operations within the area(s) and coordinate them with other organizational units.

• Bachelor's Degree
