The Director of Learning Resources reports to the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Excellence. This position (in conjunction with the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Excellence) will be responsible for all learning resources programming within Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS). The focus of the position will be on the successful academic and personal transition of student-athletes into a competitive university environment and the development of independent learners. The Director of Learning Resources specializes in working with the student-athlete population including students with learning disabilities and students who are academically under-prepared.
The Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operations, planning, and execution of an integrity-based, comprehensive academic support program for over 650 student-athletes at the University of Washington. They will serve as a member of the SAAS leadership team responsible for overseeing all staff, programming, and operations of the unit. They will have direct management responsibilities for the Learning Specialists, Tutorial Coordinator, and Assistant Director(s) of Learning Resources.
The Director of Learning Resources will work independently to prioritize and complete ongoing tasks following established departmental, University of Washington, Big 10 Conference, and NCAA guidelines. The Director will be expected to perform and work without direct supervision, with periodic check of work in progress.
LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT:
• Serve as a member of the SAAS leadership team, which oversees the day-to-day operations, policies, and procedures of the SAAS unit.
• Oversee the Learning Resources Unit, including day-to-day operations, planning, and execution of comprehensive academic support program for student-athletes who have learning challenges and/or are underprepared for college work.
• Lead and supervise assigned full-time staff including the Assistant Director(s) for Learning Resources, Learning Specialists, and the Tutorial Coordinator. Lead and manage the training and development of any new Learning Resources team staff.
• Serve as lead learning specialist for either the Football or Men’s Basketball program. This includes managing administrative duties and executing a comprehensive academic support program. Responsibilities include academic coordination, learning specialist meetings, weekly academic check-ins, compiling academic reports, maintaining tracking systems, and coordinating weekly preparation meetings.
• Ensure the Men’s Basketball or Football support staff is providing academic support services to student-athletes as effectively and efficiently as possible, and provide staff members with necessary feedback and coaching.
• Oversee bridge programming, including the LEAP program for incoming freshmen student-athletes and the General Studies course for freshmen admitted in winter and spring quarters. Responsibilities include curriculum development, hiring, training, teaching, logistics, budgeting, and program evaluation.
• Supervise the Tutorial Coordinator and tutoring staff, ensuring compliance with NCAA regulations and providing guidance on academic and administrative responsibilities.
• Manage the tutorial services budget, oversee the development and management of the tutorial services budget, monitor monthly expenditures, and collaborate with the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Excellence to prepare annual budget proposals.
• Serve as a resource for staff and coaches in the areas of learning development strategies, psychoeducational identification and referral processes, providing training in these areas as needed.
• Lead Learning Resources unit programming and oversee the implementation of learning support for at-risk student-athletes and those with learning differences. Including the planning and directing of academic programming for high-risk student-athletes to support their academic success.
• Supervise the primary liaison to the office of Disability Resources for Students (DRS) and oversee the coordination of all intake interviews, learning disability assessments, and the implementation of required accommodations and support services.
• Assist with the recruitment of student-athletes as needed, including academic meetings.
• Support additional administrative tasks as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Excellence.
LEARNING RESOURCES:
• Develop, coordinate and implement individualized academic support plans for identified student-athletes including the assessment and evaluation of students to determine learning needs and additional support.
• Maintain consistent communication with academic staff and coaches, providing verbal and written updates on student-athlete progress, including participation in weekly academic coaches' meetings.
• Conduct individualized academic meetings with a designated caseload of students, providing instruction on effective learning strategies and addressing their specific academic needs.
• Collaborate with the Director of Advising to review incoming student-athlete profiles and conduct assessments each quarter to determine and implement caseloads and individualized academic plans.
Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Big 10 Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A Master’s Degree in Special Education or a related field. A minimum of 2 years of experience in working with high-risk students, including students with learning differences, in an educational environment.
Working knowledge of collegiate athletics and student-athlete demands and NCAA policies, rules, and regulations.
Knowledge and expertise in effective learning strategies, assessment tools, motivational techniques, and study skill development. Knowledge of regulations and laws associated with ADA and accommodations for people with learning differences. Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and according to FERPA guidelines. Ability to effectively counsel and advise students with professional, academic, and/or personal questions and concerns.
Skill in working independently and following through on duties with minimal direction. Ability to interact diplomatically with individuals of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds. Outstanding communication skills both oral and written, including skill in writing memos/reports.
Ability to establish and interact collaboratively and effectively with other staff, student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and the University of Washington community. Outstanding listening, analytical, and problem-solving skills in work with academic staff and student-athletes. Ability to work collaboratively in situations that may be time-sensitive or otherwise highly pressured, with a variety of individuals including students, coaches, academic personnel, faculty, and staff.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of 3 years of experience managing educational programs. Experience working with student-athletes in a NCAA Division 1 environment. Special Education certification or teaching credentials in a related field. Working knowledge of University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics, the University of Washington, Big 10 Conference, and NCAA policies, rules, and regulations.
