The Director of Performance Nutrition will report directly to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Health and Performance. In collaboration with peer level professionals (team physicians, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, sport specific coaches, athletics administrators, sport psychologists, chefs and other department personnel), the Director of Performance Nutrition will manage and deliver comprehensive nutritional services to our Olympic sport student-athletes and athletic teams.

Work with assigned teams to educate student-athletes, coaches and peers on how to optimize health and athletic performance through effective dietary habits. Evaluate and assess the dietary practices of intercollegiate student-athletes. Provide individualized nutrition plans integrating several sport science initiatives for student-athletes to promote the achievement of short-term and long-term goals for athletic performance and optimal health. (15%)

Educate student-athletes, coaches and support staff in lifestyle nutrition skills, including but not limited to, proper food selection strategies in the grocery store, food storage, pre-game menu choices, during-game fuel choices, post-game/practice fuel choices, etc. Per the Body Composition and Weight Monitoring Policy, evaluate and assess body composition and lead the education of student-athletes and coaches regarding body composition as it relates to optimizing health and athletic performance at various points throughout the year for student-athletes. (15%)

Conduct additional physiological testing as indicated/requested, including hydration testing with urine specific gravity (USG), sweat rate testing, body composition, and resting metabolic rate testing. Conduct individual medical nutrition therapy for diagnoses such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, stress fractures and bone health, celiac disease, severe food allergies, body composition management and interventions, illness, eating disorders, disordered eating, relative energy deficiency in sport, and PCOS, among others. Ensure accurate and thorough record keeping and documentation. (20%)

Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team (CARE team and Eating Disorder team) and work closely with mental health professionals, team physicians, and athletic trainers on issues specific to student-athletes with eating disorders or disordered eating habits and other diet influenced medical conditions. (5%)

Oversee a staff dedicated to managing the Performance Nutrition Center This includes the recruiting, hiring, scheduling and mentoring of hourly employees, interns, and volunteers as well as the supervision, planning, and delivery of customized snacks for specifically identified teams/athletes. (5%)

Work closely with the CFO, marketing, and administrative team to appropriately manage multiple budgets as well as sponsorship and product trade agreements across ICA. (5%)

Manage the hiring and supervision of the Associate Director of Performance Nutrition and Performance Nutrition Fellow, including performance reviews, mentorship, and task/team assignments. Manage dietetic interns from multiple institutions. (10%)

Serve as an expert resource for athletic teams for year-round menu planning, pre/post-game menu planning, and planning with hotel catering departments and restaurants for both home and away events (5%)

Act as a point person in ICA to collaborate closely with the University of Washington Housing and Food Services staff on performance-based menus for student-athletes at Don James Center, communicate team schedules and needs to the food service staff, and work closely with food service staff and ICA to manage the training table budget. Attend Don James Center Dining meals to provide nutrition coaching for student-athletes during meal service. (15%)

Utilize a firm understanding of NCAA Supplements, including permissible, impermissible, and banned substances. Work with student athletes, coaches, and support staff to provide education on dietary supplements, taking into consideration the many facets of nutrition supplements, including drug-nutrient interactions, side effects, NCAA guidelines, NIL, and the efficacy and safety of dietary supplements. Assist team physicians in recommendations of vitamins, minerals, and supplements for student-athletes who have medical indications. Review and select all nutritional and ergogenic supplements provided in-house to the student-athletes.(5%)

Perform other related duties as required.

This position requires compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), and knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies: e.g., National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.

Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Food & Nutrition Sciences or Dietetics. Registration as a Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Certification/Licensure as required by state of practice. Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred or encouraged within one year of hire.

Minimum of 2 years working experience in nutritional counseling with an emphasis on sports nutrition. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team. Self-motivated and the ability to work independently. Possess excellent time management, organizational, and record-keeping skills. Excellent communication, presentation, and counseling skills. The ability to work within an annual budgetary plan.

Additional Requirements:

Knowledge of complementary medicine, ergogenic aids, and nutritional supplements with respect to NCAA and WADA guidelines. Demonstrate competence in nutrient analysis and meal planning. Maintain a Washington State Food Worker Card and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of safe food service practices.

Must possess knowledge of signs and symptoms of eating disorder/disordered eating and be able to make recommendations to improve and maintain dietary efficiency to student-athletes. Possess a comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy and therapeutic diet planning and implementation.

Desired Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Food Sciences or Nutrition or Exercise Physiology. Specific work experience and knowledge as a Sports Dietitian with NCAA Division 1 athletics strongly preferred.
