Job Description Summary:

The Director of Signature Events, Athletics Advancement is a key member and a leader on the Athletics Advancement team at William & Mary. Athletics is an integral part of the educational experience at William & Mary, delivering a holistic experience with high standards of performance; providing an environment where champions of uncompromising character, fully engaged with campus and the community, prepare to make a positive impact in a complex and changing world. The athletics fundraising team is seated in two offices: University Advancement and William & Mary Athletics.
The Director of Signature Events, Athletics Advancement reports to the Assistant Athletics Director, Annual Giving and is responsible for developing and executing strategic and operational plans for all signature events hosted by the William & Mary Athletics Educational Foundation. This position serves as the lead for revenue-generating events and acts as the athletics liaison for presidential and university-wide events. This position will also oversee sport-specific events, collaborating closely with all members of the Athletics Advancement team to ensure seamless execution. This position will regularly engage with internal and external stakeholders and often serve as the primary point of contact for event participants and attendees. Additionally, this position will help foster a culture of belonging and trust that embraces all people and perspectives. This position is based in Williamsburg, Virginia, and is expected to work on site.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
• Demonstrated experience planning and executing events of varying scales, including logistics, creative vision, managing vendors, and event budgets.
• Experience leading and directing staff, volunteers, and vendors in the execution of large-scale events.
• Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends, particularly during athletic events and special programs.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to engage discreetly and effectively with donors, colleagues, and university officials.
• Experience in organizational, project management, and analytical abilities.
• Proficiency with a range of software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, databases, and web-based platforms.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced degree, preferably a master’s in Sports Management, Business, or a related field.
• Professional certification such as Certified Special Events Planner (CSEP), Certified Meeting Planner (CMP), or other related credentials.
• Previous experience as an event planner in a higher education and/or non-profit setting.
• Experience developing metrics and measuring outcomes to assess event success and alignment with organizational goals.
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and engage effectively with a diverse constituent base.

Conditions of Employment:

• This position is subject to additional hours beyond the typical work week to include evenings and weekends.

Additional Job Description:

Salary: $60,000-$70,000 commensurate with experience and internal alignment.
