The Director of Sports Medicine oversees and leads all aspects of the athletic training staff’s day-to-day scheduling, implementation of procedures, and follow-up needs of Ohio University intercollegiate, club sports, and performing arts student-athletes using the medical model of athletic healthcare. In addition, this role provides strategic leadership in developing and advancing an integrated holistic model of athletic healthcare aligned with the College of Health Sciences and Professions and key external clinical partners.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Provide strategic leadership in the development and advancement of an integrated model of athletic healthcare aligned with the College of Health Sciences and Professions and external clinical partners.
The individual in this position is responsible for overseeing the athletic healthcare services provided by 14 athletic trainers across Ohio University intercollegiate athletics, club sports, and performing arts, with an emphasis on the mental, physical, and social well-being of student-athletes and performers through training, education, and quality improvement initiatives; they are the first line of intervention and refers student-athletes to appropriate practitioners as warranted.
Oversee the delivery of athletic healthcare services, including prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries for students-athletes and performing artists.
Lead and oversee coordination with the Athletic Department Medical Insurance provider including claims processes, communication, and issue resolution.
Represent OHIO Athletics in conference-related sports medicine meetings, initiatives, and correspondence.
Serve as the primary liaison among the College of Health Sciences and Professions, internal stakeholders, and external partners.
Standardize, organize, and maintain all medical records in accordance with federal and state regulations (e.g., standardized EMR across all athletic training venues).
Develop and maintain emergency action plans for all permanent and temporary practice, competition, and performance venues in accordance with university risk management guidelines, state regulations, and best practices.
Develop and maintain all department guidelines, policies, and procedures in accordance with national/international best practices and consensus statements.
Initiate annual review of EAPs, spine boarding, and other emergency procedures with the AT staff, physicians, EMS, and athletic training students.
Coordinate the purchasing and use of all equipment and supplies needed for the operation of the athletic training facility, in accordance with State and University policies.
Oversee the Athletics Department Sports Medicine Services operating budget, including coordination of purchasing processes, fiscal planning, and maintaining budgetary compliance in collaboration with department leadership and/or CFAO.
Maintain knowledge, review, and execution of rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA and Mid-America Conference, ensuring compliance relative to those applicable duties.
Develop and implement a critical incident review policy.
Promote contemporary, evidence-based athletic healthcare services.

Promote the growth and development of the AT Staff.
Engage in continuous quality improvement – including patient outcomes – to improve the quality of services provided.
Support the educational mission of the Department of Athletic Training, including precepting athletic training students.
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Provides athletic training support to student athletes. Provides athletes with injury prevention training, and evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
Responsible for the management of a unit that performs diverse but related tasks. Handles work and budget planning, ensuring efficient allocation of resources to achieve team objectives. Contributes to divisional or departmental operational plans by aligning unit goals with broader institutional strategies. Accountable for meeting short-term objectives and driving continuous improvement.
Manages a large team or multiple teams. Directly oversees at least 2.0 FTE employees or one or more supervisors. Has authority to hire, transfer, suspend, promote, manage performance, discharge, assign duties, reward, and discipline employees.
Oversees large budgets, including departmental and program-level budgets.
Solves strategic, organizational problems and ensures continuous improvement.
High degree of autonomy in decision-making, accountable for large areas.
Collaborates with executive leadership and external partners to drive organizational goals.
This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.
Requires a Master’s degree in a related field, 8 or more years of related professional experience, and 5 or more years of supervisory experience, or equivalent education and experience. Healthcare professionals must hold, or be eligible for, appropriate licensure as required by position.
