SUMMARY:
The Director of Sports Performance is responsible for the design, organization and implementation of complete strength and conditioning program(s) for all University Athletics programs/teams. Primary Oversight of Sports Performance Space and Sports Performance Staff Development. Primary Coordinator of Development for all Olympic Sports Teams. Secondary Role of Oversight/guidance to Football Sports Performance coach and assist as needed in execution of program development. Instructs student-athletes in the safe and correct execution of all parameters of resistance training and conditioning exercises in order to obtain the desired results and goals while also ensuring compliance with NCAA and University rules and regulations.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides instruction in safe and effective spotting procedures to ensure the maximum effect of the exercise and the safety of the athlete. Enforces all rules and regulations to ensure safe programs and facilities.
Applies knowledge of human biomechanics, bioenergetics, metabolism, muscle physiology, neurological adaptations and cardiovascular anatomy at rest and in response to exercise to develop appropriate and effective exercise and training programs.
Tests and evaluates athlete physical performance by administering and selecting testing procedures that ensure the collection of valid and reliable data. Maintains and evaluates team and individual physical performance evaluations data to determine special needs, appropriate training procedures, and motivational techniques.
Designs programs ensuring potential for injury is reduced and the probability of enhanced performance increased
Recognizes symptoms of performance enhancing substances and provides persuasive evidence to athletes on effects, risks, and alternatives. Recognizes nutritional factors and provides appropriate nutritional counseling. Recognizes symptoms and behaviors associated with eating disorder; being able to utilize physical performance evaluations and observations
Maintains adequate records of student-athlete attendance and hours of conditioning to comply with NCAA rules and regulations
Prepares and forwards Summer Preparatory/Off Season strength and conditioning programs
Nominates National Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year
Maintains and displays records of top strength and conditioning performances
Administers life support and first-aid procedures to users in needing immediate care.
Organizes facility and training schedules by month and/or semester
Meets with Head Coaches periodically to establish program goals and objectives, needs, strengths, areas of training emphasis, and role of the strength and conditioning program, program policies, procedures and rules. Coordinates weight training and conditioning exercises with practice demands to develop a program which ensures improvements, promotes recovery, and avoids overtraining
Establishes, evaluates, and updates the Student-Athlete Strength and Conditioning Handbook which includes everything from policies to day-to-day operations. Designs and evaluates Facility Operations Handbook, and Job Descriptions to include program philosophy, goals and objectives, rules and regulations, and safety precautions. Documents and reports any breach of rules and regulations to respective coach
Reports any injuries occurring during team or individual workouts. Examines all injury reports thoroughly. Obtains approval from Athletic Trainer or Physical Therapist for all workouts designed for injured athletes. Ensures all injured athletes remain consistent with rehabilitation and recovery protocols. Complies with recommendations (in writing) of Physician and respective athletic trainer when designing and implementing strength and conditioning programs regarding limitations and rehabilitation status of individual athletes.
Participates in weekly/monthly meetings with Sports Nutrition and Sports Medicine staff to review programming for Long Term Rehab cases.
Participates in Pre-Season/Post-Season Team Meetings with Head Coaches, Athletic Trainer(s) and Sports Nutrition to implement preventative programming for in season and off season segments based on injury trends/team needs.
Monitors and maintains budget for improvement of the facilities and programs. Maintains records of maintenance and service via purchase orders or billing statements. Maintains updated and accurate records of purchased equipment and training aids via receipts and purchase orders. Maintains updated and accurate records of professional development, continuing education units, and professional journals via purchase orders or receipts.
Selects and orders new equipment and develop bid specifications for equipment with the assistance of Football strength and conditioning Coach. Ensures new equipment is installed and assembled according to a manufacturer's installation instructions, with staff assistance
Monitors and completes the facility's safety inspection and maintenance programs. Maintains updated records of all maintenance and services performed on equipment. Checks equipment daily for safety and effectiveness
Assists in general maintenance and supervision of facility. Closes facility when necessary for safety, cleaning, and maintenance. Reports and requests any equipment repairs or replacements immediately
Performs yearly inventory of all equipment and training aids.
Maintains Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) certification. Keeps current on NCAA rules and regulations concerning strength and conditioning
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or other sports related field.
Experience: Two (2) years of related experience. Experience programming and delivery of strength and power training; speed, agility, movement sessions; and regeneration. Management experience of a strength and conditioning staff, as well as history of teaching and development of coaches. Demonstrated leadership experience. Must possesses significant expertise within the strength and conditioning field.
Knowledge / Skills: Possess knowledge of performance-enhancing substances with the ability to recognize symptoms of their use and provided persuasive evidence to athletes on the effects, risk and alternatives. Demonstrated understanding of bone, muscle and connective tissue adaptation with ability to apply knowledge in program design to reduce potential for injury and enhance performance. Demonstrated understanding of human bioenergetics and metabolism, human muscle physiology, neurological adaptations, cardiovascular anatomy and physiology at rest. Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to: Multi-task and work well as part of a team. Ability to motivate student athletes and work cooperatively with coaches and sports medicine staff.
Other Requirements: Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.
PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree.
