Department Information
The Georgia Tech Athletic Associate (GTAA) sponsors varsity intercollegiate athletics competition in 17 NCAA Division I sports for the Georgia Institute of Technology. We are a proud member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Steeped in history and success while embracing strategic innovation, our programs compete at the highest level and strive for national championships. Tech fans are passionate about their support of their beloved Yellow Jackets and cherish the many traditions involved with the program.
The Director of Rehabilitation will oversee all aspects of rehabilitation services provided to GT student athletes. Duties include prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of student-athlete injuries and illnesses. The position will also be responsible for administrative duties of the Sports Medicine Department, as assigned. The director of rehabilitation will support sports medicine services by using a high level of competence in sports medicine administration, clinical evaluation, treatment, teaching, along with a commitment to maintaining an integrated, interdisciplinary healthcare model. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: student-athletes, coaches, staff, external medical professionals. This position will advise and counsel: student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Job Duty 1 -
Provide primary medical care, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and injury counseling for student-athletes
Job Duty 2 -
Competently evaluate clinical exam results with the results of screening and testing procedures, to diagnose, formulate and educate student-athletes on individualized plans of care. Manage postsurgical cases and extended time-loss injuries
Job Duty 3 -
Oversee criteria for "safe return to practice and play," in collaboration with other department units
Job Duty 4 -
Supervise other sports medicine professionals and interns, overseeing the creation and the implementation of individual care plans for injured student-athletes throughout the rehabilitation process
Job Duty 5 -
Develop clear messaging, with data and information regarding athlete status and rehabilitation plans, that are relevant for each stakeholder. Create and effectively communicate timely reports and updates for other GT Athletics staff and coaches
Job Duty 6 -
Drive effective collaboration with other sports medicine professionals, including physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, strength and conditioning coaches, dieticians, sport psychologists, administrators, and sport coaches
Job Duty 7 -
Lead in researching and integrating the use of new products and technology to support student athlete recovery. Stay current with research topics and trends relevant to sports medicine and rehabilitation. Support clinical and professional development of staff.
Job Duty 8 -
Assist the Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine in managing all aspects of the Georgia Tech Sports Medicine Department, providing leadership with a commitment to maintaining a high standard of integrity.
Job Duty 9 -
Maintain medical files and documentation relating to all assigned student-athlete injuries, illnesses, and medical conditions. This includes, is but is not limited to, the initial assessment, follow-up assessments, daily treatments, daily rehabilitation, documentation of referral process and diagnostic testing results
Job Duty 10 -
Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Educational Requirements
Doctoral degree in physical therapy, or the equivalent combination of experience and education
Other Required Qualifications
Certifications, Licenses or Permits:
o American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Specialist Certification in physical therapy
o CPR/AED Certification - Healthcare Provider or equivalent
o Must have a valid Driver's License
Required Experience
Five or more years job-related clinical experience as a physical therapist. Experience in a multi-disciplinary athletic medicine model including, but not limited to; Strength & Conditioning, Sports Science, Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology. Demonstrated experience handling a variety of musculoskeletal post-operative cases
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Certifications, Licenses or Permits:
o Certified ABPTS Specialist in Sports and/or Orthopedics
o Current or eligible to obtain Athletic Trainer licensure from the State of Georgia
o Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)
o Certified ABPTS Specialist in Sports and/or Orthopedics National Athletic Trainers' Association
Board of Certification (NATABOC) Athletic Training Certification is preferred and/or previous
experience working with professional, or student athletes
Preferred Experience
Experience providing and coordinating sports medicine services at the NCAA Division 1 level
ABILITIES
o Must be able to work nights, weekends, and this job requires travel 10% - 25% or more of the time
o Experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively lead and manage a collective group of health
care professionals from various fields and backgrounds
o Effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation
programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities
and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine
the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; recognize life threatening
situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; fit braces and fabricate orthotics as
needed
KNOWLEDGE
o Experience in evidence-based practice, as outlined by the APTA
o Proficiency in Manual Therapy techniques including mobilization, manipulation & dry needling
o Experience with injury screening and prevention programs, including sports science data gathering
and/or data interpretation
o Advanced knowledge and skills in decision making and problem solving, service, integrity,
innovation, safety awareness, adaptability, cultural competence, influence, and the administration
of a variety of assessment tools, treatment plans and equipment
o Must possess a general knowledge of the principles and practices of Athletic Training,
Occupational Health, and Safety Administration standards, maintaining medical records including
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and following insurance procedures
SKILLS
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes, and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians, and other healthcare professionals
