Assist the head football coach in day-to-day operations of the football program, with a primary focus on the defensive side of the ball. Required Education

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• Master’s Degree preferred.
• Certification from a recognized organization such as NSCA CSCS, NSCA-CPT, or USAW

Required Experience

• Five or more years of experience.
• Previous coaching, playing, and/or teaching experience.
• Previous strength & conditioning coaching experience.

Primary Duties/Essential Functions

Football Defensive Coordinator

• Develop, implement, and adjust a comprehensive defensive game plan and scheme, including play calls, formations, and strategies, tailored to the team's strengths and opponent weaknesses.
• Create and maintain the official defensive playbook, ensuring clear communication of schemes, assignments, and terminology to all defensive players and coaching staff.
• Provide specialized coaching and mentorship to quarterbacks, focusing on technique, decision-making, leadership, and understanding of the defensive system.
• Oversee and/or directly coach specific defensive position groups, ensuring fundamental skill development and scheme execution.
• Conduct in-depth scouting and analysis of opposing defenses, identifying tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses to inform defensive game planning.
• Design and script defensive portions of practice sessions, ensuring efficient use of time and alignment with game plan objectives.
• Serve as the primary play-caller during games, making real-time adjustments to defensive strategy based on game flow and opponent reactions.
• Coordinate and collaborate with the entire defensive coaching staff, delegating responsibilities, ensuring consistent messaging, and fostering a cohesive unit.
• Evaluate individual and collective defensive performance, utilizing game film and analytics to identify areas for improvement and guide player development.
• Teach and develop sport-specific skills with the basic tenets and theory of the sport and skills needed to execute successful collegiate-level performance.
• Coordinate discipleship and mentoring of student-athletes.
• Aid in the physical development and organizational motivation of the team.
• Organize and lead team and/or individual-athlete meetings involving coaching personnel.
• Planning of practice sessions and competitive coaching situations.
• Ensure student compliance with rules regarding behavior and appearance.
• Coordinate team conditioning/training in conjunction with athletic trainers and team physicians.
• Work cooperatively with university coaches, staff, faculty, and community members.
• Identify and evaluate prospective student athletes who are good social, academic, and athletic fits for the university; communicate with PSAs and families; process official and unofficial visits while communicating through the completion of necessary admissions and university documents.
• Cultivate strong relationships with local high school and club coaches.
• Comprehend and operate by standards set forth in the NCAA and APU Manuals.
• Ensure education and enforcement of NCAA rules as they relate to documentation and input of information in JumpForward and the NCAA Institutional Request List (IRL).
• Attend required department meetings and NCAA rules presentations.
• Assist in scheduling contests, scrimmages, and exhibitions while coordinating team travel arrangements within guidelines set by the department, institution, conference, and NCAA.
• Assist in fundraising, alumni relations, community outreach, and ministry opportunities, communicating the current status of the program with alumni, friends, and supporters of the program.
• Supervise equipment in annual procurement, inventory, distribution, and collection.

Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

• Assist in designing and implementing strength, speed, agility, and conditioning programs for designated sports teams.
• Conduct individual athlete assessments and modify training plans accordingly.
• Monitor and record athlete progress and provide feedback.
• Ensure all training activities are conducted in a safe and effective manner, adhering to NCAA and institutional policies.
• Assist in managing the strength and conditioning facilities, including equipment maintenance and inventory.
• Collaborate with coaching staff, athletic trainers, and medical personnel to support athlete health and performance.
• Assist with student-athlete education on nutrition, injury prevention, and recovery.
• Maintain current knowledge of industry trends, strength and conditioning techniques, and NCAA rules and regulations.

Skills

• Sufficient experience to justify coaching, recruiting, compliance, and academic support.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to a variety of personalities.
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of current thinking in areas of sport techniques and strategy, conditioning, fitness, leadership, and program management.
• Experience with velocity-based training methods.
• Proficiency with digital training platforms and technology.
• Experience with Olympic weightlifting techniques and programming.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and minister to student athletes
• Excellent communication skills: both oral and written.
• Responsible driving skills.

Technologies

• Proficient in Google Apps, Microsoft Office, Hudl, compliance software, and other sport specific web-based and/or scouting applications.

Compensation

• Grade 16: $85,197 to $110,756 is the annual salary for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
