Graduate Assistant-Tennis

Job Summary:  

The Assistant Coach is responsible for managing specifically designated areas of the administrative operations of the tennis program.   Oversees strength and condition program by evaluating the needs of student-athletes and determining and developing individual programs, and formulates, implements, and evaluates operations of the program.   Provides technical expertise in the fundamentals of the sport, instructs student-athletes in the basics as well as advanced strategies, and assists the Head Coach in management of the team through recruiting, fund-raising, and promotional activities.

• Manages specific areas of the daily administrative operations of the tennis team as assigned by the head coach.  Protects the integrity of the sport and the reputation of the intercollegiate athletics program of the university by complying with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations as well as applicable conference rules and university policies regarding recruiting activities, student-athlete eligibility determination, scholarships and financial aid programs, scheduled practice sessions, and related covered activities.  
• Daily practice planning, provides consultation and expert advice to head coach, assists in conducting practices, and conducts individual practice sessions. 
• Assists with recruiting activities regionally and nationally in addition to recommending the selection of team members.
• Promotes a positive image of the tennis program, the intercollegiate athletics program, and the university through participation in community and professional organizations, representing the university at professional and community meetings as required, and maintaining credible relations with various news media.  
• Coordinates fundraising activities for the tennis program as assigned by head coach.  Supports established athletic fund-raising goals by actively participating in fund-raising events and promotional activities for intercollegiate athletics.
• Assists and coordinates summer camps and provides instruction to participants.

• Must be accepted into and enrolled in one of the graduate programs at Drury University.  Must be in good academic and behavioral standing
• Must complete the minimum number of graduate hours per semester or summer to be classified as a full-time graduate student and be in good standing
• If position is filled as a Graduate Assistant, must be admitted to one of the graduate programs at Drury University; must be in good standing, and must be enrolled in a minimum of credit hours per semester and summer to be considered a full-time graduate student.
• At least two years of experience as a coach or graduate assistant coach at the intercollegiate level is required.  Extensive player experience at the collegiate level may be substituted for coaching experience.  Coaching or player experience in at least a Division II level program preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, eligibility and related functions is required.
• Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary to interact with students, faculty, and the general public.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
• Ability to operate a computer, printer, and copying machine.
• Management and organizational skills are required.

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree in progress

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises student managers and summer camp counselors.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The employee needs to be physically fit and athletic in order to coach tennis.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop or kneel.   The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to travel to off-campus locations for matches.  Overnight travel is required.
