Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.
Position Summary Information
| Job Description Summary |
Reporting to the Athletics Director (the “Director”), the Head Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and management of Chapman University’s NCAA Division III varsity men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. Primary responsibilities include coaching, recruiting, student-athlete development, program administration, budget management, fundraising, and supporting the Department of Athletics.
The Head Coach oversees student-athletes, assistant coaches, volunteers, and program staff, and is responsible for the safe and efficient daily operation of aquatics facilities, including the pool, spa, locker rooms, and weight room spaces. This is a 10-month position, operating annually from August 1 through May 31, and requires a flexible work schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and team travel.
The successful candidate is expected to maintain full compliance with all rules and regulations established by Chapman University, the SCIAC Conference, and the NCAA, as well as relevant laws and regulations.

| Required Qualifications |
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant coaching experience with assigned sport(s).
- Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply, and maintain compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and policies.
- Familiarity with issues and trends impacting NCAA Intercollegiate athletics, particularly within highly selective academic institutions.
- Demonstrated technical expertise and knowledge of swim and dive coaching, training, and program management.
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and campus partners.
- Ability to establish a professional relationship with students and maintain appropriate boundaries.
- Proven ability to recruit, motivate, develop, and retain student-athletes consistent with institutional and NCAA philosophies.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment and discretion, and take initiative on matters of significance.

- Head coaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Ability to teach physical education or related activity courses.
- Experience working in a higher education setting.
- Knowledge of Chapman University policies and procedures.
- Experience working with NCAA Division III and SCIAC environment, and familiarity with rules and regulations.
- Master’s degree.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certification, including Lifeguard First Aid/CPR, Campus Security Authority (CSA), FERPA, and Fair Admissions training.
