Pay Range Information

Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.

Position Summary Information

| Job Description Summary |
Reporting to the Athletics Director (the “Director”), the Head Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and management of Chapman University’s NCAA Division III varsity men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. Primary responsibilities include coaching, recruiting, student-athlete development, program administration, budget management, fundraising, and supporting the Department of Athletics.

The Head Coach oversees student-athletes, assistant coaches, volunteers, and program staff, and is responsible for the safe and efficient daily operation of aquatics facilities, including the pool, spa, locker rooms, and weight room spaces. This is a 10-month position, operating annually from August 1 through May 31, and requires a flexible work schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and team travel.

The successful candidate is expected to maintain full compliance with all rules and regulations established by Chapman University, the SCIAC Conference, and the NCAA, as well as relevant laws and regulations. | | Responsibilities |
Coaching & Student-Athlete Development

• Coach, instruct, and condition swimming and diving student-athletes in sport fundamentals, skill development, and strategy while fostering an educationally sound and developmentally enriching environment.
• Develop and conduct daily practices and oversee a competitive NCAA intercollegiate schedule, including ensuring travel to and from away competitions, consistent with department and University policies.
• Develop, manage, and communicate a comprehensive annual program calendar that includes traditional and non-traditional seasons.

Recruiting

• Recruit, motivate, and retain student athletes consistent with institutional admissions and roster management expectations, policies, and practices. Collaborate with administrators to determine appropriate roster size.
• Partner with the Office of Admissions to best align with University goals in recruiting prospective students.
• Build and maintain strong relationships and communicate regularly with high school coaches, club programs and other prospective student contacts to reach a broad and talented pipeline, through activities that include but are not limited to in-person evaluations, campus visits and events, and facilitating applications and pre-reads

Team Leadership & Management

• Support the holistic development of student-athletes by partnering with different University colleagues and offices, athletic training staff, academic support, and campus resources to promote health, safety, and overall emotional, physical, and social well-being.
• Report and discuss concerns that implicate student mental health, student conduct, allegations of potential hazing, misconduct, discrimination, harassment or retaliation or other concerns about student well-being or conduct with Student Affairs. Educate assistant coaches and volunteer coaches on their obligations to do the same.
• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches, volunteer coaches, and student workers for assigned sport and job responsibilities.
• Promote a culture of professionalism, respect, accountability, and continuous growth.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with student-athletes, assistant and volunteer coaches, and other program staff. Educate assistant coaches and volunteer coaches on their obligations to do the same.
• Participate in professional development opportunities through recognized national coaching and sport organizations, in adherence with institutional policies and dependent on available resources.
• Serve as primary ambassador and represent the program publicly and through strategic communication and media initiatives.

Compliance & Institutional Alignment

• Ensure full compliance with NCAA and SCIAC rules and regulations. Participate in required departmental, conference, and NCAA meetings, education, and training programs, and adhere to university and departmental policies and procedures.
• Promote, model, and enforce the highest standards of competitive integrity, academic responsibility, and professional conduct for student-athletes consistent with university policies, departmental expectations, and NCAA regulations.
• Commit to reporting any potential concerns or violations to the Director of Athletics or the University’s Office of Institutional Compliance.
• Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and Title IX Mandatory Reporter, including completion of required training and timely reporting.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Develop and obtain the Director’s approval of an annual operating budget. Manage and oversee expenditures in accordance with the approved budget, departmental and University policies.
• Oversee maintenance of athletic facilities, including partnering with others in the department or University to share common facility spaces.
• Partner with University Advancement to develop and implement fundraising initiatives that support program goals. Cultivate and foster positive long-standing relationships with alumni, donors, parents, key volunteers, and program supporters.

Game Administrator Responsibilities

• Serve as game administrator for home sporting events as assigned by the Director including, but not limited to, men’s and women’s water polo, baseball, softball, and tennis home events.
• Oversight of event operations, personnel coordination, and ensuring a safe and professional game environment.

Perform other duties as assigned | | Required Qualifications |
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. - Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant coaching experience with assigned sport(s). - Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply, and maintain compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and policies. - Familiarity with issues and trends impacting NCAA Intercollegiate athletics, particularly within highly selective academic institutions. - Demonstrated technical expertise and knowledge of swim and dive coaching, training, and program management. - Effective interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and campus partners. - Ability to establish a professional relationship with students and maintain appropriate boundaries. - Proven ability to recruit, motivate, develop, and retain student-athletes consistent with institutional and NCAA philosophies. - Strong organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively. - Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment and discretion, and take initiative on matters of significance.

- Head coaching experience at the collegiate level. - Ability to teach physical education or related activity courses. - Experience working in a higher education setting. - Knowledge of Chapman University policies and procedures. - Experience working with NCAA Division III and SCIAC environment, and familiarity with rules and regulations. - Master’s degree. - Ability to obtain and maintain required certification, including Lifeguard First Aid/CPR, Campus Security Authority (CSA), FERPA, and Fair Admissions training.
