Job Description

Stanford’s Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (“DAPER”) is the premier intercollegiate athletics and recreation program in the country. We are the proud Home of Champions! We lead the nation with 134 NCAA championship titles, have won the Women’s Capital One Cup four of the last five years, and have brought home the Learfield Director’s Cup 26 times. We support nearly 900 student-athletes who compete on 36 intercollegiate athletics teams and also support the university’s physical education, recreation and wellness initiatives. Our dedicated staff embody a culture of excellence, embrace our mission of scholar-athleticism and exemplify a relentless championship spirit. Our actions and staff are guided by the core tenets of the Athletics Department culture, “The DAPER Way,” which are: Embrace Scholar-Athleticism, Pursue and Revere Excellence, Lead with Courage and Work Cohesively.

We are currently accepting applications for the position of Head Coach, Women’s and Men’s Fencing. As Stanford transitions to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) the University seeks a leader with a strong commitment to NCAA Division I-A athletics, knowledge of the collegiate fencing landscape, proven coaching success, and a commitment to women’s athletics and holistic student-athlete development. This head coach has ultimate responsibility for all administration of recruiting, training, practice, facilities, budget management, scholarship distribution, equipment, and team travel.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Strengthen and maintain a nationally competitive women's and men's Fencing program by developing a clear roadmap and competitive strategy to compete for Conference and NCAA Championships.
  • Recruit on a national level by identifying student-athletes that match Stanford’s unique academic and athletic requirements.
  • Work effectively with staff members in the areas of compliance, student development, external affairs, facilities/operations, equipment operations, athletic training, nutrition, and sports performance.
  • Lead and manage two full-time assistant coaches.
  • Schedule and conduct regular practices in and out of season. Instruct the team in a variety of techniques, warmups, and drills.
  • Provide one on one instruction to fencers.
  • Observe fencers during practices and bouts and provide constructive feedback on their performance.
  • Manage fiscal activities of the women's and men's fencing to comply with budget.
  • Build strong relationships with fencing alumni and supporters of the program.
  • Participate in development and community service efforts, as appropriate and assigned.
  • Adhere to and enforce all Stanford, Conference, and NCAA regulations and policies.
