Position Overview:
Duke Athletics is searching for a highly motivated, part-time head coach for the Duke Dance Team. The Dance Coach will work closely with the head cheerleading coach and assist with coordinating all aspects of the program. This may include recruitment, practice organization, game day preparation and performances. This is a part time, benefits ineligible position.
Essential Functions:
· Lead and assist in choreography for all performances at Duke Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball games and any extra events as scheduled.
· Help with recruitment events such as clinics, workshops, and special performances.
· Possess exceptional time management and communication skills to maximize the performance quality while providing a positive experience for members of the team.
· Work with Iron Dukes liaison to coordinate all fundraising efforts needed to support the program.
· Plan and execute team tryouts.
· Schedule, plan and lead team practices. Observe and assist team members during practice to detect and correct mistakes.
· Train the team in execution of cheers, sidelines, technique, skills, and routines. Explain and demonstrate principles, techniques, and methods of regulating movement of the body to achieve proficiency in movement.
· Collaborate with band and cheerleading team for pre-show and halftime performances.
· Must be able to demonstrate proper techniques used in dance as well as skill spotting.
· Works with the Athletic Department in all sport promotions, fundraising, and recruitment efforts.
· Assist and advise individual team members in the skills necessary for a successful performance on the field, court, etc., as well as the classroom and work environment.
· Provide and maintain a positive learning environment for team members.
· Support the Spirit Program by working closely with Head Cheer Coach/Spirit Squad Coordinator.
· Report directly to Head Cheer Coach/Spirit Squad Coordinator and Executive Director of Marketing,
Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
· Ability to work with a diverse population
· Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
· Ability to work in a highly dynamic and diverse university setting
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree required
· Prior collegiate dance coaching experience preferable.
· A commitment to knowing and complying with NCAA, ACC and institutional rules
