Head Field Hockey Coach

JOB SUMMARY: To provide leadership, supervision and organization of the field hockey program and carry out the objectives of the athletic program. To successfully recruit and retain academically and athletically qualified students, no less than 22.
Core assignments for the position during a one-year cycle include:
General Responsibilities
Ability to relate, in a positive fashion, with parents, students, faculty, staff, fellow coaches, and the public
Willingness to put significant time and effort into the performance of one's duties and responsibilities
Ability to be visible, to accomplish tasks and reach one's objectives on a timely basis, at an acceptable level and within the available tools (time, money, facilities, supplies, staff)
The ability to maintain confidentiality in all professional and personal matters is essential
Capacity for independent thought, initiative, leadership
Ability to see with vision the needs and the priorities of the entire institution and the department and not be concerned only with one's own program
Ability to demonstrate professionalism and skills as an academician as well as practitioner of the art and techniques of coaching
Willingness to put the needs of the students first and foremost ahead of the personal needs of the coaching professional
Possessing a positive personal appearance, assuming a position of a positive role model
Ability to demonstrate good communication skills both verbal and non-verbal
Year-Round Responsibilities
Support institutional and athletic policy
Stay within allotted budget
Recruit academically-athletically talented students
Be active in professional organizations and activities
Inventory, selection, care and maintenance of equipment
Assist the VP of Athletics as needed
Keep abreast of rule changes
Formulate objectives for the coming season
Seasonal Responsibilities
Review policy of accident/injury/sickness and insurance with athletic trainer
Assist compliance officer in completing eligibility lists and other reports
Arrange for a systematic issuance of school equipment
Make sure all athletes have had physicals by working with athletic trainer
Clarify to athlete the letter award policy
Clarify to athletes the eligibility rules
Ensure proper care of equipment
Fundraise within the program
Develop and organize camps and clinics
Work with athletics staff in facility scheduling
In-Season responsibilities
Assume responsibility for constant care of equipment and facilities
Assume supervisory control over all phases of team
Organize the schedule practice sessions with the idea of developing the athlete's greatest potential
Apply discipline in a firm but positive manner
Emphasize safety precautions and use acceptable training and injury procedure
Conduct oneself and teams in an ethical manner during practice and games
Report outcomes of contests to media by working with the sports information director
Instruct players on rules and rule changes
Provide to VP of Athletics for file purposes a copy of all general bulletins to athletes
File a discipline report with director of athletics when applicable, i.e., incident reports, sportsmanship report, ejection reports
Accompany and direct teams in all intercollegiate activities
End-of-Season Responsibilities
Arrange for a systematic return of all school equipment and hold athletes responsible for all equipment not returned
Arrange for the cleaning, storing, and inventory of all equipment
Recommend student-athletes who have fulfilled requirements for athletic awards
Recommend additions/improvements for the care and maintenance of facilities
Recommend personnel additions needed, i.e., assistant coaches, volunteer coaches
Submit recommendations for schedule for next year in a timely manner as suggested by VP of athletics and faculty athletic committee
Select equipment and make recommendations for purchases
Prepare a budget in conjunction with VP of Athletics
Maintain records of team and individual accomplishments
Evaluate past season
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Competitive with strong leadership capability and has the ability to motivate and persuade others in a positive direction. Well organized, works efficiently and is successful with time management. Has excellent communications and public relations abilities.
Education/certification: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required. Master's degree is preferred. CPR/First Aid/AED certification is required.
Experience required: Minimum of 5 years experience as a head coach and/or assistant coach in an intercollegiate field hockey program is preferred. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is required.
