Duties and Responsibilities

All staff members have a duty to cooperate with and furnish the NCAA, the conference office or the institution with truthful and complete information concerning involvement in or knowledge of rules violations.The Head & Track Field/XC coach or staff member may be suspended or terminated if found to be involved in deliberate and serious violations of NCAA of CIAA regulations.Ensure all student-athletes are in “good-standing” with all BSU, NCAA, and CIAA rules and regulations. Review rules with all student-athletes, monitor academic athletic progress; providing counseling when necessary. Assist in academic scheduling when necessary, inform and ensure student-athletes participate in all department sponsored functions. Maintain accurate records of student-athlete’s performance and any disciplinary issues. Ensure all student athletes comply with institutional financial aid regulations.Rules Education (Compliance Coffeehouses) satisfactory rules knowledge and documenting compliance activities are mandatory and athletics personnel will be evaluated on their performance.Maintain fiduciary control of all allocated budget funds. Manage, maintain and safeguard all issued equipment. Maintain fiduciary control of all fund raising activities that supplement the team’s budget. Develop with the VP of Athletics and Recreation, Deputy Athletic Director, and Assistant AD for Media Relations Information Director (SID) a comprehensive intercollegiate schedule with opposing institutions. Maintain positive and professional relationships with external and internal constituents. Work with Equipment and Facilities Manager to ensure compliance of issued equipment and develop a schedule for use of facilities. Work with Athletics Trainer to ensure the medical safety of all participants. Attend all athletic staff meetings. Attend institutional sponsored events (open house, orientation, senior awards banquet, and alumni events, etc.…). Represent BSU at conference coaches meetings and all meetings or events as directed by the Director of Athletics.Recruit responsible and talented student athletes. Work with admissions to arrange on-campus visits for all prospective student-athletes with their parents. Ensure all BSU, NCAA, and CIAA recruitment policies and procedures are adhered and complied with.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience

A minimum of three (3) years coaching experience on the collegiate or high school level.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The Head Coach is responsible for managing daily administrative and coaching duties of the men’s and women’s cross country & track and field program while adhering to Bowie State University (BSU), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association regulations and policies. Assist the athletic department in fundraising and public relations programs. Plan and implement the recruitment of prospective student athletes. Schedule competitive competition and maintain fiduciary control of all budget allocations. Demonstrate excellent professional and interpersonal communication skills with students, alumni, staff, administration, media and general public. Develop a coaching staff that adheres to all regulations and guiding principles and policies of BSU, the NCAA, and the CIAA. Emphasis must be on the educational and social welfare of the student-athlete while striving for excellence within the institution’s mission and in the field of competition. Must demonstrate and maintain a high level of sportsmanship at all times.

Conditions of Employment

Evenings, weekends and overnight travel required.Please be advised, COVID-19 vaccinations are not required but strongly encouraged for faculty and staff to be employed at Bowie State University. This protocol is subject to change.
