(22 hours per week), overtime exempt position on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements.
This position reports to the Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and is part of the Student Wellness, Recreation, and Athletics department. The incumbent is responsible for building and sustaining a quality, competitive intercollegiate Women’s basketball program that focuses on the development of student-athletes, supports the mission of the college, and requires an understanding of and commitment to the values of The Evergreen State College and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (
NAIA
). The position plans and conducts all activities of the intercollegiate Women’s basketball program, including recruiting, scheduling, fundraising, alumni relations, and student-athlete mentoring (academic, physical, emotional, and social components). This position contributes to the overall success of the Athletics Program and the larger division of Student Engagement, Equity, and Support through the support and development of student athletes.
Coach and direct intercollegiate teams and activities during competitive season (late October through mid-March), including plan and implement a daily training schedule.
Coordinate and schedule home and away pre-season, non-conference games in accordance with
NAIA
and Cascade Collegiate Conference regulations and identified pre-season budget.
Work with Athletics staff to plan and develop travel itineraries for all Conference travel trips.
Coach and direct team activities in the non-competitive season (May through October), including planning and implementing Spring, Summer, and Fall training schedules within
NAIA
24-week policy and creating and distributing off season fitness programs to guide student-athlete individual preparation.
Manage team budget and track expenditures according to college and state policies and procedures.
Supervise all support staff, including Assistant Coaches, Volunteer assistants, and student-athlete support staff; accompany and supervise teams on all travel trips
Plan and implement ongoing recruitment strategy which aligns with identified program, department, and institutional objectives; in accordance with
NAIA
policy, coordinate campus visits, maintain database of prospective student-athletes, coordinate, and track application fee waiver requests.
Plan and implement ongoing retention strategy which aligns with identified program, department, and institutional objectives; monitor academic progress through mid-quarter and end of quarter progress reports and credit tracking and review academic progress based on intended pathway and institutional graduation requirements; provide academic support and/or referral for tutoring, advising, etc. as needed and track academic progress per
NAIA
continuing eligibility policies.
Promote student-athlete health well-being, confirm health and safety requirements, coordinate with Athletic Trainer for pre-participation screening, medical treatment, rehabilitation, and injury prevention.
Support the mental health of student-athletes through development of strong/supportive team culture, conduct quarterly individual student-athlete meetings, and refer to Student Wellness or other support services when appropriate.
Plan and implement fundraising strategy and revenue generating program that follows department and institutional foundation guidance to identify reasonable and attainable fundraising strategies and goals; plan and implement camps, clinics, and other events to generate revenue for department and program and meet revenue generation targets.
Participate in departmental marketing and communications efforts, maintain alumni relations, manage student-athlete alumni network and database for the Women’s Basketball program.
Work with Athletics staff to establish regular communication regarding alumni activities, game schedules, and donation and/or volunteer opportunities.
Perform administrative responsibilities, including managing Letter of Intent/waiver process when applicable, confirming and tracking team waiver allocation and individual award amounts, and managing

eligibility processing and certification.
Attend all regularly scheduled departmental staff meetings, monitor and respond to electronic communications (Microsoft Teams, text messages, email, Conference correspondence, etc.), participate in divisional meetings, work groups, and available professional development, and attend and participate in all Conference coach’s meetings.
Work in collaboration with campus Facilities department and Athletic department to ensure basketball facilities (courts and storage areas) are safe, clean, visually appealing, and meet industry standards for competition.
Communicate practice and game schedules, participate in coordination of annual care and closure schedule, and recommend and track facility repairs and improvements.
In-depth knowledge of the sport of intercollegiate basketball, including rules, regulations, and strategies.
Ability to comprehend and follow
NAIA
and Cascade Collegiate Conference rules, regulations, and guidelines, particularly all
NAIA
requirements related to initial eligibility for prospective first-year students and transfer students.
Commitment to fostering success through player development, proactive coaching, and creating a team culture of engagement, shared purpose, and accountability.
Knowledge of strategies to recruit student-athletes capable of both helping Evergreen be successful in competition and benefiting from the academic experiences provided by the college.
Ability to understand and communicate relevant admission information to prospective student-athletes.
Understanding the importance of retaining student athletes and knowledge of strategies to support student athletes academically, psychologically, and physically.
Ability to communicate respectfully and work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and to foster a climate of equity and belonging.
Knowledge of student development theory to the degree that it has a positive impact on student -athletes, the department, and the division.
Ability to understand and manage team accounting, budgets, and expenditures.
Ability to understand and maintain student and all other information and records of a confidential nature.
Skill in providing training and supervision to coaching and student-support staff.
Ability to establish and maintain effective records and reporting system within the department and the college.
Ability to stress the importance of the total student-athlete experience on a college campus.
Excellent interpersonal communication, leadership, and motivational skills.
Ability to work nights and weekends according to the varying needs of all components of the position.
Willingness and ability to travel extensively for games and student-athlete recruitment.
Bachelor’s degree or four years of coaching experience at the national or club level.
Four years of experience coaching basketball at the varsity high school level or two years of experience coaching basketball at the college level.
Master’s degree.
Four years of experience coaching basketball at the college level.
Experience developing and administering a comprehensive intercollegiate basketball program.
Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per
RCW
28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
Must meet the eligible driver requirements: 1) Valid U.S. driver’s license, 2) 18 years old or older, 3) Two or more years of fully licensed driving experience, and 4) Clean driving record with none of the following within the past 2 years: Any suspension/revocation of license for reckless driving, hit and run, leaving an accident scene, failure to appear,
DUI
or other vehicle-related felony; or for multiple traffic offenses (2 moving violations/infractions in 12 months/3 moving violations/infractions in 24 months) resulting in a Conditional Status driving record or subsequent suspension/revocation of license.
Must be able to travel throughout the western United States for games, recruitment, and meetings.
Must follow provisions of the college coaching handbook.
Must obtain

/First Aid certification within thirty days of hire and maintain certification thereafter.
Must be able to move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
