Position Description
| Advertised Job Summary |
Serves as Learning Specialist reporting to the Director of Enrichment Services. Work in conjunction with academic advisors to assist student-athletes with various needs as they relate to academics. Primary purpose is to advise and assist a specific segment of students in need of additional support services, to include at-risk, under prepared or learning disabled individuals. Learning Specialists advise on course selection and assist with academic preparation based on each individual student-athlete’s strengths and needs. Assist with student-athlete recruiting events and orientation.

Bachelor’s degree and 3 or more years of experience, which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Master’s degree plus one year of experience or a bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience, which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience. Collegiate experience is strongly preferred; experience with student-athletes is highly desirable.

Ability to work with a diverse student-athlete population and communicate effectively with students, professors, peers and parents. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be able to prioritize work tasks and handle multiple tasks quickly and efficiently.

Provide student services to assigned teams, to include academic support, liaison to faculty, administrators and coaches regarding student-athletes’ academic matters, progress reports, production and dissemination of progress reports, referrals, class schedules, academic success plans. Facilitate the use of diagnostic tests for proper placement of students in freshman-level courses, communicate with student-athletes regarding scholarships and awards. Participate in student-athlete new orientations and screenings.

Assist with the tutor and mentor programs. Plan, coordinate and implement tutor and mentor employee training, observations and evaluations. Work with tutor and mentor coordinators to determine appropriate training topics, plan appointment observation schedules and implement methods of evaluation each semester. Provide academic coach trainings.

Serve as college liaison. Keep academic unit abreast of changes in major requirements, major change deadlines and other pertinent information. Attend departmental meetings as needed to acquire departmental updates. Meet with college certification officials to discuss progress of our student-athletes. Prepare EOS (End of Semester) reports to be used for departmental budgeting.

Provide assistance to coaching staffs regarding recruiting (meeting with parents, potential recruits, conducting recruiting presentations, etc.), generally occurring after normal business hours. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Enrichment and the Associate AD of Academics in the daily operations of the CARES (Carolina Academic Resources and Enrichment Services) office. Perform any special projects as assigned.
