Organization Summary Statement:
As a member of a progressive Gossett Student-Athlete Center (GSAC) Academic Services Unit, the Learning Specialist will manage a caseload of at-risk student-athletes. This individual will conduct one-on-one academic meetings with a caseload of students, teach learning strategies, and address the academic needs of student-athletes. Specific duties will also include, but are not limited to, active involvement in the Learning Services Working Group, development of creative ideas to best support at-risk student-athletes, and when necessary, acting as a liaison to faculty, administrators, and coaches regarding student-athlete academic matters. The Learning Specialist should adhere to all University of Maryland, Big Ten Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. This position will work cooperatively with athletic academic counselors and student success colleagues on campus to assess academic needs and enhance student-athlete academic skill development. The Learning Specialist will work collaboratively with GSAC staff to execute evaluations for all incoming student-athletes in both the summer and winter terms; act as a liaison to the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services on campus; and perform all other related duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: One (1) years of experience providing counseling or advising services, or conducting recruitment or enrollment activities. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of best practices in the recruitment of student athletes. Knowledge of establishing and implementing individualized learning plans. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
