Position Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Mental Health, Wellness and Performance, the Mental Health Counselor will provide general psychological services (sport psychology, evaluation, treatment, and education) to student-athletes. Incumbent will provide consultation and relevant training to coaches, athletic trainers, and other athletic department staff. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions of Position:
*Provides individual counseling for common psychological issues such as: anxiety/depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, grief, sexual trauma, and personality disorders.
*Co-facilitate psychoeducational support groups addressing issues that impact student athletes such as: grief/loss, injury, transition.
*Provide wellness checks and support for student-athletes.
*Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings with sports medicine staff.
*Provide individual mental training for student-athletes to develop and strengthen confidence, attention, motivation, imagery skills, control, and composure.
*Conduct team-based mental performance trainings and workshops.
*Support TUWell initiatives to increase awareness of mental health disorders, reduce stigma around mental health disorders and to promote total wellness for student-athletes, coaches and administrators.
*Participate in student-athlete orientations by introducing TUWell mental health services and how to access these services.
*Assist with crisis intervention according to the TUWell critical incident plan.
*Maintain treatment plans, and progress notes. Experience with Titanium Schedule electronic medical record.
*Coordinate and maintain good standing with licensure and accreditation organizations.
*Understand and comply with state statutes governing the ethical provision of psychological care, as well as those rules governing the NCAA.
*Follow protocol and procedures for effective communication of student-athlete issues with the necessary departmental staff.
*Develop and maintain relationships with organizational units at Temple University that can assist and/or enhance the mental health services provided to student-athletes.
*Participate in continuing education and professional association activities related to performance of job functions and the maintenance of skills.
*This position will be responsible for one on-call weekend per month
*This position will report to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness and Performance.
Required Education & Experience:
Master's degree in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology, or Social Work. One (1) to two (2) years of experience in intercollegiate athletics or three (3) years in a clinical setting. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is required: stress management, substance abuse and alcohol education, eating disorders, crisis management, depression, anxiety, grief, identity crisis and other psychological issues related to injury and rehabilitation in competitive athletes. Required specialized training in sport psychology, kinesiology, and/or AASP certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC).
Preferred Qualifications
*Training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Suicide Risk Assessment/Intervention, Crisis Intervention, Personality Disorders, Mindfulness, Emotional Regulation and/or Behavioral Analysis.
*Training and experience working with substance abuse and addiction.
Certification or Licensure Requirements:
*Licensed in the State of Pennsylvania as a psychologist, counselor, or social worker within six months to one year of employment.
*Licensure must be maintained as a condition of employment.
