Job Title: Assistant Dance Coach Full/Part Time: Part-Time
Reports To: Head Dance Coach
Unit: Student Affairs
Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:
The Assistant Dance Coach will support the development of a competitive LIU Dance Team, gameday activities/routines, community engagement, and meeting recruiting goals. This position will help supervise, train, and instruct the LIU Dance Team at both the Post campus to include proper technique and performances at all practices, required LIU Athletics events, and other University events.
Principal Responsibilities:
• Support the recruitment and retention of the LIU Dance team at the Post campus.
• Assist in the leadership of all aspects of the dance program, including practices, performances, competitions, travel, equipment, social media, and the overall LIU Dance Team student-athlete experience. Must utilize ethics in coaching techniques and in injury prevention.
• Help manage the overall dance program budget, ensuring that the program stays within the budgeted expenses and generates non-tuition revenue through fundraising for the program.
• Work with LIU Auxiliary Services and LIU Athletics Operations to schedule facilities.
• Help form partnerships and relationships with national and local high school dance coaches and organizations that help attract top dancers to the University.
• Travel with the team for games, competitions, and other appearances as necessary.
• Assist in the coordination of the LIU Spirit program alongside the Head Dance Coach, LIU Cheerleading coaching staff, and LIU Marching Band staff to ensure a dynamic Division I game-day experience.
• Represent the LIU Dance Team and LIU Spirit at University events and admissions functions.
• Assist in the development and execution of youth summer dance camps to develop a recruitment pipeline and fundraise for the LIU Dance Team, LIU Athletics, and the University.
• Adhere to all rules and regulations of LIU Athletics, Student Affairs, and the University.
• Attend LIU Athletics department and LIU Spirit meetings and meet regularly with supervisor.
• Other duties as assigned by direct supervisor, Student Affairs leadership, LIU Athletics leadership, and senior University leadership.
Education Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree is required.
Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience:
Qualified applicants will have:
• 0–3 years of progressively professional coaching experience, preferably in a college or university setting.
• Experience on a collegiate dance team and/or experience coaching on a dance team.
• Demonstrated a talent for building cohesive teams.
• Clear evidence of leadership and a record of working collaboratively with constituencies with respect, diplomacy, empathy, and tact.
• Sensitivity to and a demonstrated understanding of student needs from a myriad backgrounds.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with sound judgement and decision-making.
• High energy and enthusiasm to work with students to propel them toward success.
• Ability to design and implement innovative programs with a strong attention to detail.
• Basic computer proficiency.
Working Conditions:
Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to properly execute the position’s role. Travel to/from other LIU campuses for the facilitation of trainings, meetings and other university functions is required.
