Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Athletics, the Head Coach will have full responsibility for the sport. Head coaches should have a working knowledge of all Southern Conference and NCAA policies, rules, and regulations and adhere to these policies as they pertain to the job.

Job Description:

Responsibilities :

1. Adheres to all Southern Conference and NCAA rules and regulations regarding recruiting by:

• Passing the NCAA recruiting test yearly.

• Traveling to tournaments, games and clinics to evaluate recruits.

• Evaluating videotapes.

• Writing and telephoning all recruits.

• Verifying that all recruits are cleared by NCAA Clearinghouse prior to arrival to Furman.

1. Oversees all travel arrangements and insures that all proper paperwork is done.  

2. Provides Athletic Scholarship Awards and stays within the allotted scholarship budget by:

• Keeping the Athletic Director informed of all scholarship transactions and changes.

• Working with the Director of Financial Aid on awards.

1. Provides the Director of Athletics with requests for equipment to be purchased with suggested vendors and prices. Purchases all equipment in the sport and provides security and care for the equipment in coordination with the equipment manager.

2. Coordinates the admission process by:

• Filling out pre-admission recruit evaluation forms and present to Admissions Office.

• Making arrangements concerning admission visits and financial aid awards including mailing all forms, if necessary.

• Communicating all information to potential recruits.

1. Provides all reports and lists which would include: scholarship, eligibility, awards, team rosters, and NCAA Squad List.

2. Submits a proposed schedule to Director for approval. The coach should not obligate the University without approval from the Director of Athletics.

3. Organizes and conducts all practices in order that each team will have a chance to succeed.

4. Oversees and maintains the operating budget for the department.

5. Performs any other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

Relationships :

           

Continuous contact with team players to influence, motivate or persuade parties to obtain desired results.   

Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisor, members of other department, and other coaches to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information, and make suggestions related to mutual goals.

Frequent contact with potential recruits to influence, motivate or persuade parties to obtain desired results.

Occasional contact with alumni, parents and community to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.

Responsibility for Final Decisions :

Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address problems or situations that are not clearly defined.  Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.

Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.

Reports To :  Associate Director of Athletics.

Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

Education/Skill Requirements :

• Bachelors Degree with 3 - 5 years experience in related field.

• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

• Recruitment experience.

• Extensive knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

• Motivation skills.

Work Conditions:

Work is performed under usual office or athletic facility conditions requiring basic safety precautions.

Work requires:

• Frequent evening and weekend work.

• Frequent travel.

• Daily exposure to varied weather conditions.

• Daily reaching and handling.

• Daily stooping and kneeling.

• Daily pushing and pulling.

• Daily lifting and carrying.

• Daily climbing and balancing.
