Sports Training & Performance
The Sports Performance Coach is responsible for directing the physical and mental preparation of the assigned teams using sport specific, scientifically based training programs that develop the speed, strength and work capacity, and personal health and nutrition awareness of student-athletes.
Oversees the complete operation of strength and conditioning for the current 11
NCAA
Division II sports.
Enhances the physical, emotional and nutritional development of more than 250 student-athletes.
Works closely with head coaches and sports medicine personnel in sport performance development.
Manages injury rehabilitation protocol with sports medicine and monitor student-athlete health, well-being and nutritional needs.
Develops and administers evaluation tools and progress reports for athletes and coaches.
Monitors voluntary summer strength and conditioning programs in athletics.
Coordinates use of weight room areas according to priorities set by administration.
Conducts strength and conditioning camps/clinics program.
Coordinates maintenance and repair of equipment as well as recommending new equipment for the program.
Travels with the teams as needed.
Ensures compliance with Western New Mexico University,
NCAA
and Lone Star Conference rules.
Provides a broad range of administrative and supervisory functions. Supervises assigned staff in accordance with
WNMU
personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with
WNMU
philosophy.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited 4-year institution.
NSCA
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist or
SCCC
Certified w/ CSCCa. At least 1 year of successful coaching in area of sports performance of student-athletes including intern or graduate assistant work. Experience at the collegiate level in strength and conditioning. Preferred Requirements: Masters degree in Sport Performance or a related field, experience working at a

DII
institution, experience working with an athletic department that supports football .
Must be knowledgeable of
NCAA
and/ or Lone Star Conference rules and Regulations as well University policies, procedures and regulations regarding Athletics. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Able to be successful in a diverse environment. Able to demonstrate successful skills in cooperation, organization, communication, and problem solving.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)
Normal office, athletics environment, continually changing sports venues and gym environment. Requires strenuous physical work, heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication / conversation / responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting. Must be able to visually and auditory assess situations to insure health and safety. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Hours may vary depending on sporting events and needs and includes nights and weekends. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.
Requires a valid New Mexico driver’s license.
Must pass a Defensive Driving Course within 6 months of hire date.
