Position Summary Information
Minimal Qualifications required: Active medical practice (BE/BC) in Family Practice, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine and eligible for licensure in North Carolina.

Documentation of identity and employability of the applicant will be required before the hiring process can be finalized.

Appalachian State University is a public institution in the UNC system with an enrollment of 20,000 students. The Mary Shook Student Health Service provides medical care to the student body of the university. Our primary care team consists of 4 physicians, 2 physician assistants, and 2 nurse practitioners. We also have 2 full time psychiatric providers. Our facility has excellent x-ray and medium complexity lab services. We have an in-house pharmacy. Two athletic trainers also staff an injury clinic to assist students with injuries. Our robust nursing staff consists of 13 RN’s that provide efficient triage for student needs and visits. Nursing also provides allergy shots and immunizations and does travel visits with physician supervision for students studying abroad.There are many, many perks to working on a university campus and working/living within anacademic calendar, not to mention state health, vision and dental insurance options for employees and their families. If you are burned out on private practice, urgent care, or ER work, then talk with us about a very different niche of medicine.Daily duties of thsi position include but are not limited to: Provide outpatient care for illness, injury, minor surgical needs, and emotional concerns. Perform physical examinations such as athletic pre-participation physicals and preventive gynecologic exams. Work cooperatively and effectively with nurse practitioners/physician assistants on staff. Appropriately refer to outside consultants. Maintain and complete medical records in a timely fashion. Attend administrative conferences, in-service and continuing education programs. Act as a consultant for student health promotions, research projects and academic courses when requested. Accept other assignments as delegated by the Director or Medical Director.
