POSITION SUMMARY : The Vanguard University Spirit Team Head Coach leads the morale of the spirit team and audience. The coach creates and implements choreography, chants, tumbling, jumping, building skills, and game-day skill routines for athletic events. The VU Spirit Coach will lead the team as Christ-centered ambassadors for Vanguard University and helps promote spirit at athletic events including but not limited to basketball, and other University and community events. Maintains a clear understanding of the institution’s emergency medical plans and is certified in CPR/AED, blood borne pathogens and first aid. The VU University Spirit Head Coach reports to the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Recreation and Compliance Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Direct and supervise the VU Spirit program and associated team activities and performances.
• Responsible for overseeing choreography for team performances, sidelines, appearances, and half-time routines while coordinating with Assistant Athletic Director for Events and facilities on game day experience, fan engagement, and performances.
• Coordinate recruitment, auditions, and growth strategies to support and retain highly qualified talent. Reaches roster goals as defined by the athletic department and University.
• Coordinate and support the Spirit team activities to include athletic events, alumni and community events, and new student recruitment and orientation events.

The VU University Spirit Head Coach reports to the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Recreation and Compliance Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Direct and supervise the VU Spirit program and associated team activities and performances.
• Responsible for overseeing choreography for team performances, sidelines, appearances, and half-time routines while coordinating with Assistant Athletic Director for Events and facilities on game day experience, fan engagement, and performances.
• Coordinate recruitment, auditions, and growth strategies to support and retain highly qualified talent. Reaches roster goals as defined by the athletic department and University.
• Coordinate and support the Spirit team activities to include athletic events, alumni and community events, and new student recruitment and orientation events.
• Assists in halftime/timeout interactive games with spectators.
• Oversees the team’s equipment and uniform purchases. Responsible for an accurate uniform/equipment check-in and check-out process.
• Responsible for overseeing the Spirit Team budget, all program invoicing needs, and the distribution of available scholarship funds to members of all spirit teams. Prepares a budget proposal according to set guidelines for the program.
• Establish and oversee written rules, guidelines, program expectations, and team discipline for all spirit team members that are consistent with the ideals and values of the university.
• Coordinates and preserves fundraising initiatives for the Spirit teams in partnership with University advancement.
• Develops a leadership focus consistent with the university mission that promotes individual student-athletes’ spiritual growth, team involvement in service, worship, and involvement in any athletic department activities that also supports the overall spiritual growth of Vanguard University students.
• Monitor the academic progress and builds a program that results in high retention and graduation rates while helping the student body enthusiastically embrace and support the team and its activities.
• Builds a collegial environment in decision-making and administrative effectiveness throughout the University campus and within the athletic department staff.
• Builds and maintains the program budget under the guidance of the athletic department administration.
• Accepts full responsibility for Spirit Team conduct and appearance during events.
• Works with Assistant Athletic Director for Event Management and Communications regarding team pictures and website information.
• Actively works toward influencing the student-athletes conduct, public image, and spirit of cooperativeness in accord with university objectives. If University regulations have been violated, the coach must inform the Director of Athletics and discipline measures will be taken in consultation with the Vice President of Student Affairs.
• Accepts responsibility to provide complete and accurate expense reports. Reconcile P-card expenses in accordance with the timeline of reciliation by the Office of Accounting.
• Performs other related responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Must be CPR and First Aid Certified.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of applications.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize diverse and specialized details and tasks.
• Ability to handle complaints and assist in conflict management.
• Absolute preservation of confidential records, financial data and agreed upon conversations.
• Ability to be flexible to changing conditions, needs, and job responsibilities.
• Knowledge and acceptance of principles and philosophies of Vanguard University.
• Excellent customer service: must be team-oriented, able to demonstrate exceptional communication abilities, both orally and in writing, and work with multiple audiences both externally and internally.
• Must be highly motivated, organized, multitasked, and goal-orientated.

SALARY: Temporary, part-time, $16 to18 (hourly). Hours vary during basketball season.
